We Theresa’s Kids had the pleasure of working with the Boys and Girls Club of Oakland this summer where we taught more than 250 youth between the ages of five and 18 how to read, write and understand poetry. Poetry helps children build on their critical thinking, critical understanding, critical listening, and critical writing skills.

In rhythmic lines and verses clear,
New meanings come to life and near.
Through words that dance and deeply play,
We see the world in a different way.

A metaphor, simile, or hidden rhyme,
Unfolds the thoughts that bridge through time.
With each new verse, we start to see
The layers of complexity.

Speak Your Truth

Poetry ain’t just ink on a page,
it’s the fire inside, the rage that’s been caged.
Or
It just could be the rhythm in your step,
The bass that beats in your chest,
That’s speaking your name without rest.
So spit your truth, let your words fly,
Don’t hold back, an’ don’t wonder why.
Cause your voice is a beat, your story is a song,
It's a tale that you tell that’s alive and strong.
