On we are reminding that Vaccinating dogs is still the #1 way to prevent Rabies in humans. Avoid touching wild animals. Rabies is always fatal once symptoms appear but it is 100% preventable. Spay/neutering and vaccination stops future suffering and protects animals and people.

The Latham Foundation 🎉 is on World Rhino Day 9/22! Rhinos have survived for 50 million years but today fewer than 27,000 remain, encompassing all of the 5 species. Hope is at the Way Kambas Rhino Sanctuary, on the island of Sumatra. “One Special Rhino: The Story of Andatu” is the true story of Andatu, the only Sumatran rhino to be born in captivity. It was written by fifth graders at an elementary school in Brooklyn, with a foreword by Dr. Jane Goodall.

It's Mane Monday!

Our job is to make sure that rescues and sanctuaries provide all the things necessary for their residents to thrive.

Here are just a few key things we look for at equine organizations:
🐎 Outdoor time and space - key for physical and mental health
🐎 High quality diets
🐎 Other horses - social connection is a key part of horse happiness!
🐎 Patience and gentle handling from humans - many horses in rescue and sanctuary have not come from happy conditions and need a gentle approach to feel safe again

Visit sanctuaryfederation.org to learn more about horses in sanctuary!

It’s National Pet Bird Day. 1 million US households, (about 5 percent) own a bird. 🦜 Pet birds’ personalities are as varied as their colorings. They each have their own care needs. If you’re planning on adopting a bird, do some research on the breed you are looking into and make sure they will fit into your lifestyle and ability to care for.
Personality - Birds can be very social, active, intelligent, and talkative. Some birds require less handling, others want to be with next to you.
Medical Care - find a local vet that specializes in avian care. Become familiar with the various conditions that can affect certain species.
Grooming Care - Routine grooming including nail trims and daily bathing. Exercise and mental stimulation are important to their well being.
Life Spans - With a healthy diet Parakeets and Canaries can live from 5 to 15 years. Larger ones like Cockatoos and Macaws can live to be 20 - 80 years old!
Have a Happy bird day!

This Wednesday we are 🎉 spotlighting the ocean. 🌊 Tomorrow is World Manta Ray day.
Manta Rays are gentle giants with the largest brain size of all fish. Mantas glide gracefully through the water, and are no threat to man. In fact, they play a very important part maintaining healthy ocean ecosystems. They are filter feeders, helping regulate plankton populations for marine balance, safeguarding coral reefs. Find out more about Mantas and how to help our oceans.

911 Salute to Canine Responders - More than 300 heroic working dogs served alongside human first responders at Ground Zero after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
The toll on these working dogs inspired the creation and research of organizations like the Penn Vet Working Dog Center at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. It was founded by a Ground Zero veterinarian to study and train future canine heroes.
