October is Dyslexia Awareness Month!!
Did you know that 1 in 5 people are dyslexic? That means millions of people around the world process language, information, and the world a little differently. There are likely dyslexic thinkers in your classroom.
Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that makes reading and spelling hard, affecting how fast or accurately a person reads.
Dyslexia is not a reflection of someone’s intelligence, creativity, or potential. In fact, dyslexic thinkers often show reading and writing struggles that are completely disproportionate to their other high abilities. While processing written language can be a hurdle, their minds excel at big-picture thinking, complex problem-solving, and incredible innovation.
Some of the most brilliant minds and cultural icons who are game changers in our world were/are dyslexic thinkers! Steve Jobs, Albert Einstein, Meryl Streep, Walt Disney, Whoopie Goldberg, Richard Brandson, Magic Johnson, Tom Holland, Octavia Spencer, Salma Hayek, Edward James Olmos, and Steven Speilburg are among dyslexic thinkers.
October is Dyslexia Awareness Month, and October 8th is the official day to celebrate brains that think differently. Let’s celebrate these brains!
