Cold weather on a college campus can sneak up on you—here’s a practical, student-friendly safety checklist to stay warm, healthy, and out of trouble ❄️

🧥 Personal Safety & Health

* **Layer smart**: Base layer (thermal), insulating layer (fleece/hoodie), outer layer (wind/water-resistant).
* **Protect extremities**: Gloves, hat, scarf—frostbite hits fingers, ears, and toes first.
* **Watch for hypothermia signs**: Shivering, slurred speech, confusion, extreme fatigue → get indoors and seek help.
* **Stay dry**: Wet clothes + cold = danger. Change ASAP if you get soaked.
* **Eat & hydrate**: Cold burns calories faster, and dehydration still happens in winter.

🧊 Getting Around Campus

* **Assume ice = invisible**: Walk like a penguin (short steps, slow pace).
* **Wear proper shoes**: Non-slip soles beat fashion sneakers in winter.
* **Use lit, cleared paths**: Avoid shortcuts that may be icy or poorly lit.
* **Public transport safety**: Buses may run late—dress like you might be waiting outside longer than planned.

🏠 Dorm & Apartment Safety

* **Don’t overload heaters/outlets**: Space heaters should be approved and kept clear of fabric.
* **Never use ovens for heat**: Serious fire and carbon monoxide risk.
* **Know heating emergency contacts**: Save maintenance and campus emergency numbers.
* **Keep windows cracked only if safe**: Prevent pipes from freezing, but balance heat loss.

🚗 Car Safety (If You Drive)

* **Emergency kit**: Blanket, flashlight, phone charger, snacks.
* **Warm up safely**: Never idle in a closed garage.
* **Keep gas tank at least half full**: Prevent fuel line freezing.
