Had to pull up and celebrate my girl Mrs. Met as she made HISTORY as the first female mascot inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame!

Oh, AND it was her birthday?! Happy birthday, Mrs. Met! Forever cheering you on from one mascot queen to another. 💛 Andddd I’m just getting started. More from today’s celebration coming soon!

If you happened to tune in to the third inning of the Cleveland Guardians’ July 18 game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, you would have heard broadcaster Matt Underwood talking about … the University of Akron.

Specifically, he was talking about a UA billboard on the side of The 9 across from Progressive Field featuring Akron mascot Zippy the kangaroo wishing Guardians star José Ramírez a speedy recovery from a fractured left hamate bone.

The shoutout was part of a larger series of Akron ads riffing on the action across the street. Others had Zippy flirting with the Guardians’ mascot (“Hey, Slider, call me!”) or questioning the umpire (“It looked like a strike from here!”).

The one thing the ads haven’t done? Make an obvious pitch for the University of Akron.

That’s no accident. One of the ideas behind UA’s “The World Needs More YES” is that higher-ed advertising has gotten a little too generic.

The larger approach has been to make Akron’s advertising more playful and topical, without always rushing to make the sales pitch. And it seems to be working.

Leadership looks good on these future Zips! 🌟 I attended the Oelschlager Summer Leadership Institute recently, which is designed to empower high school students by introducing them to the requisite skills, attitudes, and resources for success in college.

I enjoyed watching them discover their potential throughout their week on campus learning about resilience, determination, and prioritizing wellbeing!

We recently celebrated the groundbreaking of the new Bulger-Spanton amenity “connector”, marking the official start of construction on an exciting addition to the ongoing revitalization of campus residence halls. 🦺 🪏

The new connector will create a shared community space designed to strengthen student engagement, connection and community. The space will feature an amenity kitchen, a package center, and extra gathering spaces!
