🎶 Hello from Firefly Music School — we’re back!
We’ve been busy making music with our wonderful students here in Highland Square, and we’re excited to start sharing more moments, tips, and behind-the-scenes glimpses again.
If you’re new here, welcome! We’re a small community of passionate teachers helping kids grow through music — one lesson at a time. 💛

Our next teacher is Isaac McGruder!
Isaac teaches piano, voice, and all band and orchestra instruments. He is currently a 4th year Music Education major at the University of Akron. He is a french horn player, and has been playing for just over a decade. Prior to being a student at the University of Akron, Isaac played alto horn in the All-Star Brass Band of Columbus for two years. As a member of that ensemble, he had the privilege of performing at Carnegie Hall. Since coming to Akron, Isaac has been a member of the University’s Symphony Band, Wind Symphony, Horn Choir, Brass Choir, as well as UA’s Concert Choir. Aside from music, Isaac is an avid cook as well as a bit of a movie buff.

This week we’ll be featuring our teacher Noah Whetstone!
Noah is a senior instrumental music education major at The University of Akron. He teaches beginning lessons for piano and voice, and all band and orchestra instruments, but his specialty is saxophone! He has played saxophone since the fifth grade and has continued playing through college. Most recently, his saxophone quartet at the university had the honor of performing at the 2023 International Saxophone Symposium hosted by the U.S. Navy Band. In his free time, he enjoys performing at his local church, participating in musical theatre, going on walks, and spending time with friends and family.

After a long post-COVID hiatus, we’re relaunching our social media pages. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be highlighting our teachers and staff—first up is our office administrator Sophia Marshall!
Sophia has been with us for almost a year now. She is originally from the Youngstown area, but moved to Akron for school. She graduated from the University of Akron last year with a degree in French horn performance. She has since performed with various community ensembles and chamber groups, and currently teaches horn and mellophone at local middle and high schools. Outside of music, she enjoys reading, crocheting, and spending time with her cats. Feel free to stop into the office to say hi!

Staff highlight: Meet Steve! Steve is the owner of Firefly Music School. He plays piano and guitar. His favorite food is spaghetti and he loves to ride his bike, garden, and spend time around the bonfire with his family. Steve also has an interesting trait. His ears don’t match one another! Rock on, Steve 🎸

Hi everyone! Hannah here. I’m a music teacher and board-certified music therapist here at Firefly. I wanted to take this opportunity to talk about our Music Therapy program. Music therapy is where a trained, credentialed professional uses music as the medium to meet a variety of needs. These music based techniques are based in evidence. I would love to take this time to answer any questions you might have related to the program and music therapy. While our services have halted during the month of March, I would be happy to set you up with an assessment session for April. Stay safe!
