We are thrilled to announce the establishment of the McCool Fellows Scholar Program, created through the generosity of Diana and James ’77 McCool. In its inaugural year, two rising juniors, Max Gursky and Lucie Kenst, have been selected as the 2026 McCool Fellows.

“The McCool Fellows Scholar Program was created to recognize students who demonstrate strong academic commitment and qualities that we believe will continue to shape a meaningful and successful life: leadership, communication, critical thinking, discipline, character, resilience and the ability to inspire others,” James McCool said. “These enduring capabilities will remain vital in any future, regardless of advances in technology.”

Through a competitive application process, Gursky and Kenst were selected from a pool of applicants based on a video and essay submission and an interview with the McCool Fellows Scholar committee. Both students have received a $7,500 scholarship, which is renewable for their senior year at $8,500 to be applied to their Hoban tuition.

The finalist pool was exceptionally strong–so much so that the committee recognized two additional students whose applications, interviews, leadership and character stood out in a meaningful way. AJ Clemens and Maria Brennan were both selected to receive a one-year, non-renewable scholarship award of $2,000.

“All of the finalists represented themselves, their families and Hoban extremely well throughout this process, and we have great confidence in their continued ability to lead, serve and positively influence others,” James McCool said.

A hallmark of a Hoban education is instilling life-long learning in each student. In addition to English classes, some other courses have summer assignments. These assignments help to prepare students for the next grade level. Students should complete these assignments prior to the start of the 2026-27 school year. All rising juniors must complete the Financial Literacy course. Please note: Some classes may have assignments due during the summer months.

Seven pieces of artwork were selected as Hoban Purchase Prize winners from this academic year. These pieces were purchased from the students to be displayed throughout the building.

Established in 2014, the Hoban Purchase Prize honors the creative talent of Hoban students while also enhancing our school environment. Since that time, we’ve purchased 64 student artworks.

Students whose works are chosen for the Purchase Prize receive $100 and a printed reproduction of the artwork. Their original art piece is framed and labeled with the student's name and year of purchase, and then displayed in a prominent location in the school building.

"Our goal is to highlight student artistic achievement, to create an ever-growing archive of student artwork, and to enhance our school environment through the presence of creative energy. In doing so, we make visual Moreau’s principle that the “mind shall not be cultivated at the expense of the heart.” —Zach Feador, Chair of the Fine Arts Department
