Class of ‘25 graduate and current Science teacher in Akron Public Schools , Zion Johnston, and his 7th grade science students were part of the process of bringing Akron's first Community Schoolyard to life. The approved design was unveiled May 27 at Jennings Community Learning Center.

Named for Elizabeth Davidson Buchtel, the wife of University of Akron founder, John R. Buchtel, this award recognizes and honors women, who like Elizabeth, are leaders in philanthropy to benefit the University of Akron and have mentor bold and selfless giving by others.

What a wonderful day yesterday as Barberton High School students came on campus and visited with the School of Education and toured the campus. These future Zips enjoyed their time talking to current students about college life, learning about the engineering from Dr. Zhao, and about education from Dr. Tsai and Dr. Visco. Even the UA Pup made an appearance. 😊

Past The University of Akron graduates of the School of Education came back tonight to talk to our soon to be graduates about life as a first year teacher.

Plus, students learned valuable financial advice and how to work on getting their 5 year professional license.

What a wonderful experience for all involved.

Thanks to Dr. Plaster, Dr. Maguth, Dr. Visco, and Mr. Jay Austin for putting this all together.

And thank you to the graduates who came back to help be part of this evening, you were all amazing!
