Today, The University of Akron recognizes Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and celebrates Black freedom, resilience and achievement.
As a university community, we reflect on the significance of this day and honor the many contributions that continue to enrich our campus, our city and our nation.

The Hower House Museum welcomes all Hower school alumni this July!
The Hower Alumni Weekend will be taking place on Friday July 17th and Saturday July 18th between 12-3pm (last entry at 2:15pm). Whether you attended Hower Trade, Hower Vocational, or Central Hower, all alumni are welcome to enjoy a free tour of the Hower Family’s 1871 mansion, learn about the family’s role in Akron’s development, and discover more about the school’s founder – Blanche Bruot Hower.
In anticipation of Hower Trade School’s centennial in 2027, the opportunity to participate in a University of Akron graduate student project will also be introduced at this time. Questions concerning this project can be sent to Isabella Pieri at [email protected] or by calling 330-972-6909.

Alexis Schultz ’26 has been named to Team USA for the 2026 World Dodgeball Federation (WDBF) World Championships, which will be held in Dec. 5-13 in Bangkok, Thailand. A three-time National Collegiate Dodgeball Association Women’s Player of the Year, Schultz will compete on the Team USA’s women’s foam squad.
Schultz, a mechanical engineering major from Stow, Ohio, started her journey to the world championships with a training camp in Kansas last October, which led to her selection to Team USA for the North American and Caribbean Dodgeball Championship tournament in Mexico in November. She was selected after followed by another camp this spring in Arizona.
Schultz graduated summa cm laude from UA and had been a Williams Honors College Scholar. She helped lead the Zips to National Collegiate Dodgeball Association championships in 2024 and 2025. UA had another strong season in 2026, advancing to the championship game before falling to Michigan State.
