Congratulations Lainey Sandberg!
Two SMSU graduate students, Alesha Bates of Brainerd, MN, and Lainey Sandberg of Aitkin, MN, were recently recognized for their outstanding presentation at the Center for Scholastic Inquiry International Research Conference in Orlando, FL in April, 2019.
The title of their award winning presentation was "Calming The Storm Regulating Behavior." Based on their research project during their Master's Learning Community, the two special education instructors designed and developed an effective set of screening tools, activities, lessons and record-keeping system strategies to help teachers work with K-12 students who are struggling with self-regulation and emotional control in their respective schools.
Since presenting in Florida, they have also been accepted to present at the annual Minnesota Rural Education Association Conference in November and have been hired as consultants to teach others how to implement their curriculum.

The Aitkin Education Foundation is launching a fundraising campaign to replace the Aitkin High School concert choir’s performance robes.
Aitkin High School has a decades-long history of quality vocal music. Our students excel at their concerts, their spring music contests, and the annual musical each spring.
Please help the Aitkin Education Foundation in their effort to replace the choir robes which date back to the mid-1950s! They have been worn by generations of AHS students! Many repairs have been made to the robes over the years, but the age and condition of the material doesn’t allow for those repairs to continue.
Seventy-five (75) robes are needed at a cost of approximately $150 each, including a garment bag used for storage. Please consider supporting this project. Your donation will benefit students today, and for decades to come.
Checks should be made payable to AEF and can be mailed to AEF, 306 2nd St NW, Aitkin, MN 56431.
Donations are tax-deductible.
Friday, February 15th will now be a regular school day.
This will replace Monday, January 7th.

This morning around 8:45 am we received notification that a gas line was hit across 210 by the Aitkin County building project. For precautionary reasons and under police guidance we evacuated all students and staff to 4th street on the north side of the high school. Police and administration did a sweep of the school to ensure all staff and students had evacuated. Jim Bright and our custodians shut down all fresh air intakes. Students waited cooperatively while the gas leak was capped. Once the leak was capped, representatives from Minnesota Energy did a walkthrough of the High School with a meter to make sure no gas had entered or remained in our building. At 9:15 we received notification that all was clear and it was safe to return to the building. Students were back in class around 9:25 am. I would like to thank our students and staff for the orderly way in which they followed evacuation directions, waited patiently, and returned to the building and learning safely. Should you have any questions feel free to contact me.
