2020-2021 Aitkin Public School Plan

As of Thursday July 30,2020, Minnesota schools are now required to determine learning scenarios based upon Covid - 19 data over a 14 day period of time in Aitkin County. Aitkin County has done well in our efforts to contain the spread, using the Minnesota Department of Health and Minnesota Department of Education ratio formula, our number was at 5.05.

If school started today, Aitkin would be able to have all students return to school everyday, and if Aitkin County maintains low numbers of Covid-19 cases, we will plan to do that on Tuesday September 8. Students and staff: unless they have a medical issue will be required to wear masks with the exception of Physical Education class, lunch time, and recess times. Regardless of the scenario we start in, families can choose to be a part of our Remote/Distance Learning option. In a meeting on Tuesday morning, the board made a motion to support this recommendation.

Our schools capacity to stay open is now dependent on how well we all implement social distancing, hand washing and all of the other strategies recommended to stay safe.

In the chart below, the 5 Models of Instruction that will be used to help us determine the learning scenarios that we may need to consider at some point during the year based on the data provided.

Number of cases per 10,000 over the last 14 days, by county of residence

0-9 - In-person for all students

10-19 - In-person learning for elementary students, hybrid learning for secondary students

20-29 - Hybrid Learning for all students

30-49 - Hybrid Learning for elementary students, Remote/Distance learning for secondary students

50+ - Remote/Distance Learning for all students

Busing capacity will still be a challenge, so if families can transport their children to and from school we will ask that you do that. All students will be required to wear masks on the school buses as well.

We will be collecting needed student information as we continue to prepare for the start of the school year. We will be sending out another quick survey over the next week or so. It will be critical that parents and caregivers respond to that survey so we can address our bus routes, determine distance learning needs, provide meals etc.

Please do not provide feedback or opinions to this post. I am simply sharing the facts as they stand today. Much can change in one month’s time. We thank you, parents and students, for your continued patience during this unprecedented time. Please be kind to one another. If you have any questions please call 218-927-2115.

Thank you!

Monday afternoon I visited with Kelly Bast our FACS teacher at ISD#1 about the possibility of using the sewing room to make cloth masks for our employees, especially our drivers and those helping with deliveries. By the end of the day she had a plan, material and an idea on how we could make masks. Today I was on a Google Hangout with all of our staff at 10:00, and I asked if there would be Paraprofessionals or anyone else willing to make masks! By 10:45 we had a team of staff members working on making masks! Things like this is what makes our school and community awesome! Stay safe everyone!

How to Make Bagpipes Out of a Garbage Bag and Recorders

Hey students! What are you doing to fill your time? Here is something you can create with your old music instruments from elementary school. You can find the plan here:

instructables.com How to Make Bagpipes Out of a Garbage Bag and Recorders: This instructable is how to make a simple bagpipe like instrument out of basic household materials. Granted, it does not sound all too much like a bagpipe, but it works similarly and is fun to mess around with.

Thanks for your continued support of ISD #1.

ISD #1 - Aitkin Public Schools

Hi Aitkin Public School Students, Parents and Community,

Here some information that is for all students and their families regarding picking up belongings and materials from your school building. Please contact your building office if you have any questions. Please read the message below. Thanks!

March 23, 2020
Locker Clean Out/Material Pick up

Summary of this information will be going out to families through email, Facebook, Twitter and voice messaging.

The schools will be open from 7:30 - 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday March 24th and Wednesday March 25th. If these times do not work for you please contact the high school or elementary office to set up time for you to pick up your items. Rippleside classroom teachers will put student materials that are in their classroom into a bag and have it labeled for each student with teacher name and grade level and place the bags in front of their locker.

One family member will be allowed to enter the building and go to lockers to collect items as needed.

Pre K-6 Students: enter the main entrance by the office at Rippleside.

7-12 Students: enter the North Entry at the High School.

Students who need to access the locker rooms will be able to do that as well. If you have a locker in the locker room, please clean that locker out as well.

The school will remove locks that are left on lockers and lockers that are not emptied will be emptied by school staff starting Friday March 27th.

Students will not be taking home any packets or sheets related to their distance learning at this time. High School students need to make sure they have their school issued computers. Learning Materials will be sent out later. Textbooks will be sent home on an as needed basis.

We ask that families/students practice social distancing and not hang out in the building.

Our plan is designed to allow access to necessary materials while trying to maintain the safety and security of our staff.

March 15, 2020
Dear Families,
Today, Governor Tim Walz and Education Commissioner Mary Cathryn Ricker announced that all Minnesota public schools will close to students starting Wednesday, March 18, 2020 with the plan to resume instruction on Monday, March 30, 2020.

During the school closure for students, Aitkin Public Schools will be joining school districts and charter schools across the state to revise plans to equitably distribute distance learning to our students should we need to close schools statewide for a longer period of time due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Minnesota Department of Education is defining distance learning to mean that a student receives daily interaction with their licensed teacher(s) and appropriate educational materials.

Starting March 30, 2020, per the instruction from the Minnesota Department of Education, student learning will continue for the rest of the school year.
Our educators will be giving thoughtful planning to our distance learning plan, offering careful consideration for students in a variety of areas, including students receiving special education services, multilingual learners, students experiencing homelessness, and students who rely on meals served at school.

Once our distance learning plan is finalized we will communicate the plan to families through our school web site and page. We will also utilize our Infinite Campus parent call system to let you know when to look for new information.
As always, our first priority is the safety and well-being of our students. We also want to ensure every child has access to the education they need and deserve.

We will continue to keep you informed as we navigate COVID-19.

Daniel J. Stifter
