October 4th–10th is banned books week. A banned book is a book that has been removed from a library, school, or public access because there are objections toward its content. These objections might include sexually explicit themes, violence, political ideals, perspectives from marginalized groups, or, overall, any themes deemed “inappropriate” by dogmas that demand censorship.

The problem with banned books lies within how it encroaches on freedom of speech. The censorship of diverse perspectives, stories, and lived experiences perpetuates that division that is felt so heavily in this country.

Choosing to still read these stories protects your intellectual freedom and keeps society from further oppressing marginalized voices. Differences are what make humanity beautiful, and we need to keep empathy alive by exploring diverse stories and sharing what makes each person unique.

Sorry not sorry. These silly reels aren’t going to film and edit themselves!

And, yes, we censor abusers here.

We took a selfie at each Humanities table to celebrate Meet the Major day.

While data, science, and numbers are important, the Humanities remind us of what makes us human. They encapsulate many different mediums to create and tell our stories. They allow us to understand who we are now and who we were in the past. They teach us how to communicate with the world around us in words instead of numbers. They explore different cultures, and why those cultures and languages are important. The Humanities are underrated subjects in the collegiate academic world, but the Writing Center very much appreciates them 🫶
