There is something incredibly humbling about being invited into a school and trusted to help strengthen teaching and learning. That trust is a gift I never take for granted. Every school I work with is filled with educators who want the same thing: to help students succeed. My job is to help build the systems that make that possible.
This summer, I tried something different.
I ditched the death by PowerPoint presentation.
Instead, teachers worked alongside me with a workbook, my document camera, and the actual resources they would use throughout the school year. We read together. We discussed. We collaborated. Most importantly, we worked.
By the end of the institute, teachers weren't leaving with pages of notes they would probably never look at again. They were leaving with curriculum maps, assessment plans, student data systems, instructional tools, and resources they had already started building for their own classrooms.
Professional learning should change practice. It should give teachers confidence. It should make Monday morning easier.
One of my favorite pieces of feedback from this institute was that educators appreciated having time to create while they had support. That has become a core belief in my work. We don't just learn together. We build together.
When schools invest in meaningful professional learning, they invest in their teachers. When teachers feel supported, students benefit.
This work is my passion.
Helping schools build stronger instructional systems so every student has a better opportunity to succeed is exactly where I'm meant to be.
As another school year begins, I'm grateful for every district, principal, and teacher who has trusted me to walk alongside them.
I'm excited to see the impact these educators will have on their students this year.
How was your summer professional learning? What was one experience that truly prepared you for this school year?
