The Montessori method of teaching writing and reading is at once incredibly logical and genuinely surprising when you first encounter it. For example, learning to write comes before learning to read in Montessori pedagogy. Though it may seem counterintuitive, it is easier for children to create their own words than it is for them to decipher the words of others. Montessori recognized the importance of following the natural development of the child's brain and the value of giving children the keys to self-expression from the earliest possible age.

Throughout my years as a Montessori educator, there have been many instances and even daily occurrences of children feeling that a concept they are trying to learn or a skill they are trying to acquire is too hard. In my early days, I wasn’t sure how to approach this obstacle. I didn’t want to ask children to do things they didn’t want to do. One day, an experienced mentor reminded me that life is filled with difficulties and things we would rather not do. It’s our job to support children through these challenges to help them build the endurance and the mental integrity to try new and difficult things. It’s our job to help them develop the inner discipline to do the things they need to do to get through the day (cleaning up after themselves, taking responsibility, helping their community) as well as the things they need to do and learn to become the best versions of themselves (try the new material that intimidates them, practice the skill they’re struggling with until it becomes easy). I love these ideas from .siggie and use them or some variation of them on an almost daily basis. Try them for yourself and see how they help!
