In addition to the signs, we will be boarding up the basketball rims discouraging people from using the hoops. All facilities that have the capability to be locked will be locked. We would like to thank you all for your anticipated cooperation.

Remote Learning Recommendations During COVID-19 School Closures

Following the Governor’s announcement that schools will not re-open before May 4, 2020, The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education issued additional guidance regarding district and school remote learning plans.

With the extension of this closure, we believe students, families, educators, and staff in all communities will benefit from the clarity of statewide recommendations as educators and others continue to support their students during this crisis.

Soon, I will provide you with a summary of the short set of guiding principles that were derived from the state and revised to fit the needs of the Agawam community in regards to remote learning over the next several weeks.

Remote learning cannot replace students’ experiences in school communities with their teachers, administrators, and support staff. We must all pull together – parents and caregivers, students, the community, and of course, our educators and staff – to help students continue their learning over this extended period.

As a school district, Agawam Public Schools will take the direction from the state and work to put forth more specific guidelines according to our contexts, capacities, and needs.

We will continue to issue guidance to support districts and schools in their implementation of remote learning, including specific recommendations related to students with disabilities, English learners, and high school students.

We are all working hard in this effort and appreciate your continued feedback, support and understanding.

This is Superintendent of Schools, Steve Lemanski with some information for today. Schools will be open today from noon until 2:30pm only if students need to pick up personal belongings or items they may need at home for the next 3 weeks. [03/16/20]   For Monday, March 16th

Good morning,

Schools will be open today from Noon to 2:30pm for students and staff to gather what they may need for the next 3 weeks. There may be an additional opportunity but directives have been added daily on what can or cannot be open.

I am working with several staff members today and tomorrow to set up some guidelines for keeping students connected to school during this time we are out.

If you do come in to school, please try to keep items off of your desk. Custodians will be busy over the next few weeks deep cleaning and sanitizing.

I am not sure if we will be opening at any other time or date.

Stay tuned on how this impacts our return to school and athletics.

Governor Baker closes all Mass. public schools, prohibits gatherings of 25 people or more, and bans on-premise consumption at bars and restaurants in response to the coronavirus outbreak.

[03/15/20]   The Agawam HS Athletic Dept fully supports the ban on school activities during our three week shutdown. Please remember that “captains practices” are not supported or encouraged by the district and have no influence on a candidate’s status when try outs begin.

Good Morning,

This is Superintendent of Schools, Steve Lemanski, with an important message for high school staff and students. I received a report late last evening that a family member of an Agawam High School student has flu-like symptoms and was reporting to his physician. Out of an abundance of caution, I am cancelling school for the high school today. I repeat, the cancellation is for the high school only.

I anticipate the high school will be back on schedule for next week. As you are aware, the Coronavirus is changing how we do business on a daily basis. I urge you all to take precautions to keep yourselves healthy.

I will keep you posted on the latest developments as information on the virus comes forth.

Thank you and have a good day.

Spring Sports will now begin on March 30th

The MIAA Board of Directors held a conference call this afternoon to discuss the status of the MIAA spring sport season scheduled to commence on Monday, March 16, 2020. The past couple of weeks has certainly provided our member schools with challenges related to the outbreak of COVID-19. The beginning of spring sports is just one of the many decisions that needs to be addressed.

After much discussion, the BOD decision is to delay the start of the 2020 spring season to March 30, 2020. Respecting the fluidity of this situation, this decision will be revisited prior to March 30.

This decision is based on available information from numerous health agencies and is made in the best interest of our student-athletes, schools and communities.

[03/12/20]   Message From Superintendent Lemanski:

Good Afternoon,

Here is some updated information for you based on updates and recent events in Massachusetts. As you are aware, Governor Baker declared a state of emergency for Massachusetts in response to the current situation involving COVID-19 (coronavirus). Please be aware that although the number of diagnosed cases across the state has increased, there are currently no confirmed or suspected cases here in Agawam.
That being said, we are meeting both internally as a school department and in consultation with our partners in the Town Hall to ensure that we can address our responsibilities to keep our students, staff, and community safe. We are awaiting additional guidance this week from DESE and the Department of Public Health (DPH), but in the meantime we are taking the following steps:
We are canceling, postponing, or modifying any events that include community members involving large numbers of outside people this week. School Principals will be sending individual school messages with information that pertains to your son or daughters school.
We have heightened our sanitizing/disinfecting program in each school, paying particular attention to high-touch surfaces.

Tomorrow morning, I will be on a conference call with the Commissioner of Education and DPH on which I expect to receive additional guidance. This will inform our decision-making for future events. We will communicate more information as it becomes available.

Thank you,

Steve Lemanski,
Superintendent
