People ask me all the time where they can get a "Bonnie" of their own... well here's your chance!

We got Bonnie from Stonedragon Ranch Fell Ponies last August and she has been the absolute best addition to our family. So gentle and careful with Alice, so intelligent and easy to train, and overall very light and agile for how stout she is.

This gelding is out of the same dam as Bonnie, and by the same stud as our Cosmo.

Fell Ponies are a rare breed, and only a couple dozen foals come around the US market each year.

At the airport waiting to fly back to Iceland and thought I'd share this photo I took from last year of these two Icelandic mares and foals from Kjartansstaðir Farm...

Can you guess which foal belongs to which mare??

Grateful to Steve Hostetler Photography for capturing some of these fun moments from the Wild Horse Summit. Gertie was a lovely dance partner and I enjoyed the opportunity to have these conversations with her. ♡

Today concluded the Wild Horse Summit at The Wild Horse Refuge and unfortunately Gertie (and most of the other babies) did not find adopters. They'll be ok, as thankfully they'll go back to Wild Hearts Haven where Taryn Hillman and others will ensure they find good homes in their own time.

But I always feel a little conflicted at the end of a short journey with a new Mustang. I know that it's just scratching the surface to interact with a horse over a few days and hope they go off and have a nice life.

And though I don't have the facility space or time to take Gertie home and train her myself, I do want to offer the help that I can to any adopters of the horses from this event.

In my experience, most Mustangs don't end up in bad situations because of malicious actors. They end up in bad situations when well-intended people reach the end of their skills and resources. So my goal is to share what I've learned over 20 years of training Mustangs, to help people sort through their own experiences on their own.

So anyone who attended the Wild Horse Summit can enjoy their first month of my Online Academy for free. Additionally, I would like to extend 3 free virtual lessons to each adopter of these babies, whether they adopt them tomorrow or next year.

As George Brauneis said in his own offering of support, we can help build a bridge between the horse and their future partner, then step aside. ♡

Reflections from Day 1 & 2 at the Wild Horse Summit at The Wild Horse Refuge ...

It's such a common trope today: "Start from a place of connection..." but connection isn't a starting point. The act of BUILDING connection is the foundation of relationships. ConnectING is an action and a choice that you make within every moment of every interaction with another being. But you don't *start* with a connection.

Connection...bond...trust...relationship are results of communication and attunement. You build a connection through conversation and developing a language with another individual (human, or animal).

The reason this is important for me to emphasize is because I see so many folks get stuck before even getting started because they don't feel like the horse is connected, so they are afraid to ask any questions.

This little horse I've drawn certainly is in that boat. She's not one that is actively seeking a conversation. She's confident in herself, easily bored, and could take or leave me at this stage. If I sat and waited for some magical connection before doing anything else, I very well could be waiting forever. So instead, I start asking her little questions... telling her a little about myself... seeing what kind of language we share, and what vocabulary we can each learn so that we can both communicate more effectively with one another.

Imagine sitting across the table from a stranger. How do you build a friendship? By starting a conversation. A proper two-way conversation where you listen as well as share.

So, start from a place of attunement... pay close mind to your partner's thoughts, concerns, and attention. And shape the conversation from there. Choose the action of *connectING*... and know that the strength of that connection in a functional relationship is as flexible, flowing, life of its own.

Come join me next weekend in Craig, CO at the Wild Horse Symposium!

Several adoptable Mustangs of various levels of training, lectures from industry experts, tours of the wild horse sanctuary, and training demonstrations!

I'll be working with a Mustang, doing gentling demos, all 3 days. Adopt that little horse at the end of the event! 🥰

Thought I'd share another "Hawk Talk" ... aka my morning musings on hawks, horses, or life in general.

Today I'm discussing Species Appropriate Care and how different species are designed to experience the world differently. And when we become stewards to other species, we need to treat others the way THEY want to be treated, not how WE want to be treated.
