Today is straighten my studio day. Of course, my smallest helper, Little Ewok, decided to draw rather than help. She's a rescue cat, 12 years old and a sweet cat.
Please enter me into the giveaway. Piece of box elder burl, now filled with acrylic. Help me out, what do I make with it?

More uke build finished.
More of the uke build.
Hi Luke and Dena and Gary Zimnicki! I really enjoyed the ukulele build in September and finally finished mine and wanted to post an update and some pics. I knew I wanted to do a shellac finish but did not have a lot of experience with shellac. Long story short I ended up sanding down and starting over about 4 times before I got the hang of it. I ended up doing a full on french polish with pore filling with pumice on the back and the sides. I did not pore fill the soundboard, just applied the shellac like a french polish on the soundboard. I used Tru Oil on the neck and fret board, as well as on the headstock and bridge. Prior to doing the finish I did carve a little on the head stock. All in all with the do overs, I probably have 35 hours into the finish, but I learned how to do a french polish, and some things not to do. The uke sounds incredible and looks good except where I sanded through the veneer on the upper bout. I ordered another uke kit, this time a tenor size and will finish the body before gluing on the neck and bridge, so it should take less time to finish, and will be easier to apply the finish. All in all this was a great class and I am very glad I did it. I can't wait for the guitar build in January. Now I just need to learn how to play a ukulele (already started, you tube is great!), here are some pics of the finished uke. Thanks again for doing what you all do!!
Thank you to our sponsor Dynamic Industrial Supply! We appreciate your support!
Just finished the ukulele build course! Another great class! Gary and Luke did a fantastic job in guiding a full class in the build of a really nice mahogany and walnut concert uklele. The instruction was excellent, the kit materials were outstanding, the people in the class were friendly and we had a great time! Everyone ended up with a beautiful ukulele that we each built ourselves. Everyone was helping each other when it was needed, Gary being the primary instructor was very thorough and willing to answer all questions. Luke was helpful and knowledgeable, and entertaining, as usual. We even got to throw axes today while glue was drying!! Over all an excellent class and if you get the chance sign up for this one when it happens again! 5 stars!

We pride ourselves in sharing our knowledge and passion for craft with you.

The Sam Beauford Woodworking Institute is creating a future that is worthy of Michigan's inspired past. We work to educate students of all ages in the art of woodworking.

The SBW is a non-profit 501c3 organization dedicated to promoting personal development through woodworking. We are located in Adrian, Michigan. We provide woodworking classes for all ages as well as job training, workforce development and rehabilitation services for Lenawee County residents. The SBW is an accredited education center recognized by the Woodworking Career Alliance of North America, the woodshop provides certification for over 250 different machine operations. We are a certified evaluation center that awards certificates, credentials, and transcripts that are recognized by thousands of woodworking manufacturers as proof of skill level and job experience. In partnership with the WCA, the current credentials program is recognized by the State of Michigan for its respective state-sponsored career and technical education programs. Aside from workforce training, our certified woodworking facility allows us to offer art classes and machinery resources to the public. Class offerings include sculptural woodworking, woodcarving, wood turning, instrument building, and canoe building, along with many other offerings. The woodshop is ran by a ten person board and a strong volunteer base. We have 3 part time instructors employed with us. Our great team allowed us to serve almost 1000 students at the woodshop in the past year. The large majority of those students received free tuition and materials for their classes.

Mission: We provide resources to learn marketable and measurable skills that are valuable in a personal and professional capacity.

Memorial Day 2020 🇺🇸
We are forever grateful for the ultimate sacrifice of those who died for United States of America.
Today we praise the men and women who sacrificed their lives in the name of our country. Their selfless devotion, outstanding courage, and honor should inspire us to make their sacrifice meaningful.
May their courage and dedication never be forgotten.

We Miss You....
Here are some photos of all the non woodworking stuff that happens at the shop. Posting these makes me realize that there is way too much goofing around going on.

They’re having a virtual parade and we’re in it! Tune in to learn more about what we do and our beautiful virtual float we’ve built!
Hint: Our float involves the five levels of our Woodworking for Warriors program! 🤔

Today we were able to give one of our flag box’s made through our Woodworking for Warriors Veterans Program by Chad Diffin to a passed Veteran in honor of his memory.

Thomas H. Swartz was a Vietnam War Veteran who served in the Army earning a Bronze star during his service he passed December 13th, 2019.
His wife Nancy J. Swartz picked out a handmade flag box for her husband today in his memoriam.
Thomas attended a couple different courses at SBWI, and was an avid woodworker, fisherman, and beloved family member.

Our hearts are with Nancy and her family and we hope the handmade flag box from our veterans will help to ease her heart.

The warriors are staying as busy as they can under the circumstances. Wednesdays certainly are not the same. We are looking forward to reopening.
Check out what @chaddiffin has been working on during his quarantine. Its called Operation Warrior Salute. Chad is leading an effort to make beautiful flag boxes for veterans who have dies during the pandemic. Reach out to us if you know a veteran who has died and the warriors will send you a handmade flagbox for free.

THIS IS A CALL TO ARMS.... The woodworking for warriors are making flag boxes for veterans who have died during this pandemic.
Will you join us?

Operation Warrior Salute
WHO: All Self Quarantined Woodworkers
WHAT: Provide free flag display boxes to veterans who have died from Covid-19 or other illnesses
When: NOW
Where: At home in your own shop
Why: We are currently waging a war against Covid-19, and we need to do something that will make a difference.

From Chad Diffin - Chair of Operation Warrior Salute
"The veterans of the Woodworking Warriors program are grateful for the opportunity to use the SBWI woodshop every Wednesday for the last 10 months. We’ve decided to pay it forward. While we are currently unable to use the woodshop due to social distancing guidelines, some of us have woodworking equipment and lumber at home. It is our wish that any family that receives a flag also has a way to display that flag. Those of us that are able will begin making flag displays, and when we are able, we will begin distributing them. We will never be able to make enough of these on our own, so we are asking for your help. We hope that those of you who are able will join us for Operation Warrior Salute"

[03/11/20]   Dear Friends, We regret to inform you that we are cancelling this years Great Lakes Woodworking Festival due to COVID-19 (Coronavirus). This was an extremely difficult decision for us to make. Safety is our number one concern and we do not want to put anyone at risk.
The Great Lakes Woodworking Festival is the highlight of our year. It is a chance for us to celebrate all the great woodworkers and artists that we have come to know over the past several years. It is also a chance for us to celebrate the success of our school with the people that matter the most. SBWI would not exist without your continued support. We appreciate all of you spreading our message to your friends and family members, as well as your likes, comments and shares on our social media pages. The craft of woodworking matters and we are making a difference.

School of Practical Stereotomy - École Pratique de Stéréotomie

What an amazing week at the Sam Beauford Woodworking Institute. The students worked exceptionally hard at creating their trestles and the end results are even more satisfying to see. It was such a fun week. Thank you so much for the wonderful experience!

A finished “Moore Trestle” by a student in the Stereotomy workshop this past week. Believe me when I say, the 2D Stereotomical drawings are just as beautiful as the completed pieces. Thank you @thestereotomist for a great week! 📐✏️

Stereotomy students added a new elevation, added to their plan views and added a new and final net to their 2D Stereotomical drawings today. These drawings allow the students to measure the exact angle at which to cut their wood pieces. Tomorrow, the many pieces will fit together to form each student’s trestle. @ Adrian, Michigan

Busy hands and minds make for a very quiet class! Stereotomy students are making strides toward their French Trestles.

Day 2 progress in the Stereotomy workshop.

SBWI is happy to welcome Patrick Moore from The Professional School of Practical Stereotomy for the first day of a five day Stereotomy workshop.

Today, students are learning how to create 2D stereotomical drawings to be used in building their own French Trestle, specifically a design called The Moore Trestle. 📐✏️📏

A freshly assembled Windsor Continuous Arm Chair, and a beauty at that. 👍 Nice work, Cale! @ Adrian, Michigan

Lasers make everything more fun. Here students are working with a laser for a sight light to drill holes in each seat for the legs and armposts for the Windsor Continuous Arm Chair. Keep your eyes peeled for some finished chair photos tomorrow. 👀
