Thanks for great couse Applied Functional Science with Paul Edmondson. I really appreciate your way of education, including the possibility to access the study materials in advance and this way get ready for the live lessons. This concept gives the possibility to fully experience the course and there is enough room to discuss the issues with the teacher. The way Paul Edmonson was teaching and presenting the course was excellent, clear and easy to grasp. This concept is amazing, and it is one of the best structured courses I have ever attended.
Hi Guys!

Addressing symptoms vs. root causes
As health and wellness professionals, we’re hired for all sorts of reasons, to manage weight gain, back pain, low energy, stress/anxiety, and confidence issues to name a few. At the core of our industry lies a servant’s heart and we make it our mission to help our client’s resolve their ailments and if we’re not careful, our quick-fix culture/mentality can easily cause us to get stuck at the symptomatic level and fail to address their needs at a causative level. These types of engagements ultimately lead to frustration, disappointment and resentment for both parties.

Most assuredly, we’re not hired to make temporary changes but if we’re not mindful of how we’re engaging, that’s exactly what we’re positioning our clients for. One of the challenges we face is that the phrase “no-pain-no-gain” is synonymous with our profession and we operate in primarily physical environments that prioritize tactics ahead of strategies. Albert Einstein said: “If I had 60 minutes to solve a problem, I’d invest 55 minutes defining it and 5 minutes solving it.” That means we ought to hit the pause button on physical tactics to create space for developing a mental and strategic plan, which requires we move out of our professional comfort zones.

Once you begin to slow down and engage a thought process centered on “long term seeing” (opposite of the instant gratification mentality), you’ll start to notice the Chain Reaction® of Manifestation—>Driver—>Issue. Concurrently, you’ll also realize you’re spending most of your energy addressing the manifestation and much less time investigating the driver of their protective behaviors or the root cause. Here are a few examples...

Example 1
Manifestation: Weight gain
Driver: Emotional eating
Issue: Low self-esteem
Addressing the manifestation would warrant a diet and exercise program. However, eating less and moving more is adequate to resolve low self-esteem.

Example 2
Manifestation: Workaholic
Driver: The need to feel valued
Issue: Value is derived extrinsically
Addressing the manifestation would suggest finding a work/life balance. However, leaving work early cannot help develop an intrinsic sense of self worth.

Example 3
Manifestation: Stressed out
Driver: People-pleasing
Issue: Control
Addressing the manifestation may lead to a yoga class. However, becoming more flexible is incapable of resolving the need to be liked by others.

This does not mean the activities associated with addressing the manifestations are not beneficial, they simply lack the substance necessary to resolve the underlying issues. The solution is in the situation: address the cause and the manifestation will take care of itself.

Here’s a thought process that will help manage your client experience more strategically:
- Discuss the difference between a manifestation and an issue with your client
- Help them understand your efforts have been well intentioned and superficial (manifestation-focused) in nature...this is not bad, it just is!
- Ask them to become more present inside of protective behaviors and ask them to identify which emotions are present during that time (they can bring these emotions to a meditation, the Headspace app is great)
- Help them explore some constructive ways of resolving their issue
- Continue performing the manifestation-focused actions that make them feel like they are playing an active role in improving their quality-of-life (balance wants and needs)
Pause and cause them to reflect on their efforts along the way

On October 27th/28th, Gary Gray and Michael Rizk will help health and wellness professionals explore and better understand the behavioral sciences so they can be more effective inside of client engagements. Details to come!
Have you ever noticed that despite your best efforts to help your clients reach their goals, oftentimes, they never really get there in an enjoyable, meaningful and sustainable way? This scenario can easily cause you to label your client as “lazy," “demotivated" or "lacking discipline" and while it takes pressure off of you as the professional, it fails to solve any of the real challenges at hand. Replacing statements with questions provokes curiosity and can be very helpful in improving the situation: What would my client's protective behaviors suggest they believe about themselves? How is my client measuring success and would changing the metrics alter their behavior? What is my client’s relationship with effort?

Failure to reach a goal is inevitably an approach problem. Said another way: results reflect approach! Interestingly, you may be doing all the right things: delivering goal-specific workouts, offering sound nutritional advice, providing tips on sleep and hydration and yet, something seems to be missing from the equation. We’ve discovered that while client’s come to professionals to enhance their Body, it’s their Mind holding them back and it’s their Spirit that suffers. This realization generously acknowledges the 3-dimensional nature of the people we serve everyday and also highlights why our efforts don’t always lead to the preferred outcome, because what works for the Body does not solve the issues of the Mind. In other words, a hammer is not the best tool for painting a room.

It turns out the three biggest challenges keeping people from reaching their goals are perfectionism, people-pleasing and self-doubt. The question is: Which of those issues can be resolved by way of diet and exercise? You got it...none of them! This doesn’t mean that diet and exercise aren't an important part of a balanced lifestyle, they’re simply not equipped to resolve the issues many of our clients face. Problem is, we haven’t been empowered to manage the conversations that are needed to help our clients breakthrough. For now, simply observe your clients journey and begin to ask yourself why. Why are my clients putting everything else ahead of themselves? Why are they behaving in ways that don’t support their goals? Why are they choosing the path of least resistance over and again? These sorts of questions are the basis of a compassion and empathy and the solutions to their situation is on the other side of them.

Each week, we will share with you how to start addressing the issues the keep your clients from getting where they want to be, such as helping them understand how change happens in the brain, how effort is more important than outcome and how to access a lifetime of inspiration. Good news is, you’ll be the professional credited with facilitating this transformative revolution.

Mark your calendars! On October 27th and 28th, Gary Gray and Michael Rizk will be showing professionals how to help their clients take a Mind-First Approach® to transforming their clients from the inside-out. Details to come...

Is your body in sync with your brain?

Little did Dr. Gary Gray know how much his 1970’s discovery of Applied Functional Science® (AFS) would impact the world of medicine. Recently, Dr. Gray met with Dr. Gary Blackburn, a student of AFS, who shared how his use of AFS principles, strategies, and techniques has made a tremendous positive impact on his care of patients suffering from head and vestibular injuries. In our upcoming webinar this Wednesday, we get the opportunity to listen in and learn as they share their practical knowledge and discoveries.

When a longtime friend recently updated us on the concussion research and treatment strategies he’s been doing, we were astonished at what he was uncovering and how it could impact the lives of those who are suffering.

Based on more than three decades of treating and studying head and vestibular injuries as a military medic, professional football, baseball, and hockey, Dr. Gary Blackburn will discuss with Dr. Gary Gray what he’s learning, how he’s treating, and the tools he’s using to improve concussion recovery. We invite you to join us for our next webinar event this Wednesday on this important and timely topic!

Concussions have been dominating sports news lately and for good reason, traditional assessments and treatments are not adequate.

In our next webinar, we’ve tapped an expert who has been studying and treating concussions and vestibular injuries in the military and the highest level of U.S. professional sports. In his conversation with Dr. Gary Gray, you’ll learn surprising information about what occurs inside the brain when a concussion strikes and how to use specific movements to guide recovery.

We’re particularly excited to share this information because it comes as the direct result of thousands of hours of research, treatment, and study by one of our very own GIFT Fellows. It’s cutting-edge information on a critically important topic. Invite your friends in medicine, therapy, training, and treatment. You don’t want to miss it!

Our Newest Webinar for Trainers is TOMORROW!

There are few moments in sports more exciting than when a soccer or football player makes a hard cut, jukes the defense, and scores. As fans, we see art in motion but, as trainers, we see the results of thousands of hours of hard work. Excellence is no accident.

We’ve spent the past five decades studying how the body performs and how to prepare clients for success on the field or when walking down a set of stairs. We’ve been entrusted to educate hundreds of thousands of professional trainers so they can effectively guide their clients to reach their goals. Excellence is no accident.

It is our desire to help you become the go-to movement professional in your area of influence, which is why we provide a series of webinars on practical tips you can trust. In our next session (tomorrow!), we’re sharing practical wisdom about the relationship between the knee and the foot. These principle-based techniques can be used with your very next client! We hope you’ll join us.

Coming Soon - “Do the Knees Really Have to Stay Over the Toes?”

https://grayinstitute.com/webinar-register-s

As we prepare our clients for their activities outside our sessions, we need to train them to move efficiently and safely. If we spot a new technique, we shouldn’t run with it just because it’s popular. We need to make sure it’s tracking with the principles of human movement.

We’ve spent the past five decades studying how the body is made, how it functions, and how it moves. One of our favorite areas of the body is the knee and its relationship with the foot & ankle. In this month’s free webinar, we’re sharing some practical wisdom about this area of the body and some principle-based techniques you can use with your next client. These tips are part of our mission to help you become the go-to movement professional.

Do the Knees Really Have to Stay Over the Toes? | Our Next Free Webinar

As trainers, we love to learn new ways to help our clients. The problem is that some popular techniques don’t fully address all the ways the body moves, so we’re stuck trying to discern which ones to implement and which ones to avoid. We ask questions like, “Will this help Susan be more active when she plays with her kids?” “Do these movements help Jim find more success and less pain during his weekly ice hockey game?”

The body is complex and amazing, which is why we’ve spent the past five decades studying how it’s made and how to move. One of our favorite relationships is that of the knee with the foot and ankle because they impact the way the rest of the body moves.

In this month’s webinar, we’re sharing some practical wisdom you can apply immediately into your training. You’ll leave this FREE webinar with practical steps to improve your guidance, helping your clients move more efficiently and avoid injury. These tips are part of our mission to help you become the go-to movement professional.

Upcoming Webinar: Do the Knees Really Have to Stay Over the Toes?

When you’re training your clients, it’s important to understand how they move so your guidance aligns well with the rhythm of their life. If they’re a tennis player, your training regimen should look like and benefit their tennis game.

Over the past five decades, we’ve seen thousands of fads come and go in the world of movement. So many people seek to make a new widget, develop a clever technique, or place their stamp in the world… and that’s OK… but if it stands in opposition to how our bodies work in real life, we need to pause and think, “is this true?” “Is this beneficial?”

In this month’s webinar, we’re serving up training wisdom when it comes to the alignment of our knees with our toes. You’ll leave this FREE webinar with practical steps to improve your guidance, helping your clients be more efficient and avoid injuries. These tips are part of our mission to help you become the go-to movement professional.
