Student Spotlight on Senior Hunter Zieman.
“I’m from Horton, MI which is a small town 15 minutes outside of Jackson. I chose Siena because it felt like home, I knew how well known the nursing program was and I was recruited to play basketball (I now play lacrosse). After graduation I am excited to start my career and eventually get married to my fiancé Jillian in October. I think my favorite nursing school memory has to be the time the computer fell and broke in Lynn’s class”.

I’d like to thank Hunter for sharing his story!

Alumni Spotlight: Grace Carey, BSN, RN Class of 2020...

"Graduating during a pandemic was strange for sure. But it wasn’t too difficult..as SHU nursing professors taught us, RN’s have to constantly adapt to an ever changing field. I accepted a job offer from Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital for night shift on the 5th floor General Medical Surgical Unit! I passed my NCLEX in 63 questions! I moved into my first apartment in Brownstown, MI with Channing Brzys. And I adopted a beautiful kitten, Pepper! I absolutely love my job and the people I work with! I finally feel like I am where I’m meant to be. I love taking care of my patients and their family members, making time to sit down and listen to their life stories or their concerns; even though charting takes up the majority of the time haha. Some days are harder than others, but I think back to why I started this life long journey in the first place; to help make a difference in people’s lives when they are in their most vulnerable state. The SHU nursing program helped me to become the nurse that I am today and I will be forever grateful. I am continuing to grow in my knowledge and confidence day by day. Know that you will succeed, just put in the time and effort, and you will get there! Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire! And Go Saints!"

Alumni Spotlight!!! Update from Corinne Skinner, BSN, RN 2016 Siena Heights University Nursing Graduate.

"Siena really gave me a huge advantage when I started as a nurse. I felt so much more prepared just because of all the hands on clinical experience and critical thinking classes we received! I am currently working in the MICU and Covid ICU as a charge and staff RN at St Joes Hospital Ann Arbor. When I’m not working you can find me fishing lake st Clair with Team Reel Therapy or on YouTube as part of the Rustic Duo YouTube channel. If I could give future nurses a bit of advice it would be that you’re never doing as bad as you think! Don’t be hard on yourself. Keep asking questions and learning! Don’t be afraid to take a med surge job at first. It may not be your dream job but you’ll learn SO MUCH and become an expert at the basics!"

Check out Corrine's YouTube..it's pretty funny!!!

Spotlight on Chelsea Howard, Clinical Instructor for our Pre-Licensure OB Class! Chelsea is finishing her second year working with SHU, she is an amazing addition to our Adjunct Faculty, we are so lucky to have her helping us educate the nurses of the future!!!

I love that I have the opportunity to teach at Siena for a few reasons. I love Siena Nursing students! Not only are they incredibly respectful, but they are educated and always come prepared to learn. Siena Heights has a great nursing program as far as I have witnessed. The main reason I love teaching OB clinical is because when I reflect on my nursing education I had several poorly conducted clinicals during my time as a nursing student (not affiliated with SHU nursing) and I feel strongly about being here to be the difference. I want students to walk away feeling like they can relay the knowledge they gained in the classroom work into a real-life scenario. This one of the best ways I can think of being the change I wish to see in the world.
Go Saints!
Chelsea
Thank you for all you do Chelsea Howard we are so proud to have you working with us!

Alumni spotlight this week is Ashley Winans from the Class of 2019!

Currently working at Charles and Virginia Hickman Hospital as a CCU nurse after spending 1 year in med surg.

What’s going on in my life? Just raising my three munchkins and enjoying time with them, reading as much as I can, and trying to find a new hobby lol.

Next career goal: to go to a bigger CCU or a PICU in a year or two.

We love to hear what our alumni are up to!!! Thanks for sharing Ashley!

Alumni spotlight on....Sydney Cook, BSN, RN

My name is Sydney Cook & I am a 2017 graduate of Siena Heights University’s BSN program! I am a registered nurse at Michigan Medicine. I started on a high-acuity Medical/Surgical unit where I worked for the first 18 months of my career. Here, I got to put to use the skills SHU prepared me for though both their lectures and SIM labs. I believe starting on a unit such as this allows new grads to learn the critical thinking that develops with practice. This includes time management, multi-tasking, and providing the patient centered care we were prepared to give! I currently work on a Hematology/Oncology unit. I love this patient population and learn something new everyday.
Along with working full time, I am wrapping up my MSN/FNP program! I am set to finish in March.
At SHU they taught us that the nursing field is one that is always changing, and learning will never stop (and boy were they right). I am beyond grateful for the education I received and full-heartidly believe they made me the nurse and (still) student I am today.
At SHU, you receive hands on learning through small cohorts that allow for an interactive learning environment. The professors and faculty here are the most passionate and genuine people I have encountered, and their love of nursing is portrayed through the education they provide each and everyday. They genuinely care about each student, which is so important when enduring such a strenuous program. I felt nothing but support and encouragement throughout the entire program.
I encourage everyone considering this program to jump in with both feet!
I am always available to help anyone in any way I can, so please feel free to reach out at any time.
