This is Michelangelo Buonarroti’s Pietà (1498–1499), in St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City. It's one of the most famous sculptures in the world. He was only about 23 years of age when he finished it and is the only work he ever signed. Carved from a single block of Carrara marble.

Mary looks very young, which Michelangelo explained as a reflection of her purity. She's also much larger than Christ, and her voluminous drapery hides the fact that a seated woman couldn't realistically hold a full-grown man across her lap. If not for art, would we know anatomy? Or, did anatomy improve art? Or both…?

The Laocoön Group in the Vatican Museums' Octagonal Court. Pliny the Elder credits it to three sculptors from Rhodes: Agesander, Athenodoros, and Polydorus.

The date is still debated. Some scholars see it as a Roman marble copy of a Hellenistic bronze from around 200 BC. Others think it's an original from roughly the 1st century BC to early 1st century AD.

It was dug up in 1506 near the Esquiline Hill, and Michelangelo was among those who came to see it. Its exaggerated musculature influenced him heavily.

The RENAISSANCE, or rebirth, implies “not the first.” Clearly this sculpture from the first-century BC shows the “Greeks” knew a little something about anatomy too!

Belvedere Torso, in the Sala delle Muse of the Vatican Museums. It's signed on the front of the base by Apollonios, son of Nestor, an Athenian, and usually dated to the 1st century BC. Michelangelo sculpted a replica that he often used as a reference.
