Great leaders understand the importance of keeping their people engaged.

This means noticing and recognizing their accomplishments.

“It’s not up for discussion.”

And just like that, you’ve ended the conversation. You’ve shut down input. You’ve told your people their voice doesn’t matter.

Are there times when decisions aren’t open for debate? Of course.

But great leaders know that, most of the time, that is not the case.

Great leaders solicit input and better ideas and different perspectives. They know that leadership doesn't mean you have the best ideas.

Great leaders see the value in their people.

Great leaders don't silence input; they bring it out.

In a recent training, we were discussing how often the sheriff spends time with the troops. One deputy remarked:

“We’d have a better chance of seeing him at the monthly Coffee with a Cop.”

That comment says more than it seems. Most morale problems don’t start with policies; they start with communication gaps.

When visibility is low and conversations are rare, an “us vs. them” dynamic forms. Connection fades. Trust erodes. Morale suffers.

Communication is the most important skill set in law enforcement, both inside and outside the building.

Strong communication isn’t optional. It’s foundational. hashtag

Great leaders should always be looking ahead, but the start of a new year is an excellent opportunity to pause and truly assess.

* How can we make our people better?
* How can we make our organization better?

Great teams and organizations aren't built from a single idea; they are built from a mindset of continually seeking new ideas and possibilities.

A new year isn’t just a reset of the calendar. It’s an opportunity to raise the standard.

In moments of uncertainty, our people don’t look for the loudest voice; they look for the calm one, the steady one, the leader who shows up prepared, composed, and focused on solutions.

Leadership presence isn't built during crises. It is built in the day-to-day interactions with our people.

It comes from our appearance and how we present ourselves, our ability to communicate, and how we carry ourselves.

Ritz-Carlton doesn’t “hope” its people remember their core values.

Each day begins with a quick stand-up meeting to discuss one of their 12 core service values. Because there are 12, each value is revisited about twice a month.

That’s not an accident.

That’s repetition. That's intention. That's culture

Values don’t live on posters or websites. They live in conversation, in reminders, and in daily practice.

Here's a question: Does your organization even have core values?

- To all of you who make up the unyielding Thin Blue Line...

- To all of you who face down monsters and cast them from our streets...

- To all of you who make the world and your communities a better place...

Thank you.

Wishing you all a happy, healthy, and safe 2026.

"The test of leadership is this: is anyone or anything better because of you?" -Mark Sanborn

The quote captures leadership perfectly.

Leadership isn't about rank or perks or control. It is about impact.

If your people are growing, you're leading. If your people are shutting down, you're not.

Promotion to frontline supervisor enhances leadership by exactly 0%. The same applies to titles, collar insignias, and raises.

If your agency doesn't have a comprehensive leadership development program, create your own. There are more books than you could ever read, more videos than you could ever watch, and more classes than you could ever attend.

Ultimately, that call, that incident, that decision will be your responsibility. In this industry, our people deserve nothing less than the most spectacular leadership possible.

A colleague overheard a supervisor talking about attending a leadership class and saying, "This class is not for me; I've been doing this a long time."

Let’s make this absolutely clear: there is zero correlation between the amount of time you have in a leadership role and the quality of your leadership.

Great leaders carry a growth mindset: they assume there is always more to learn, more to refine, more to question. The moment you believe you’ve “arrived,” you’ve actually started to decline. Real leaders stay curious; the desire to learn never ends.
