What is yakhchal? Not sure? Well, the 6th grade students of Melva Davis will tell you. The classes of Mr. Carlson and Mrs. O’Brien did a cross-curricular lab where they built ancient Persian coolers called Yakhchals. A week ago, the students built them around soda bottles from clay and wool. Today, they buried them in soil and added a little ice. In 30 minutes, the temperature fell 10 degrees. Nothing like building a child’s confidence and knowledge. STEAM ROCKS! #aesdpride
Mesa Linda Middle School giving out accolades to students and staff. Congratulations to the following Bulldogs for being “Students of the Month” – Zoey Gomez, 8th grade; Angelina Alvarado, 7th grade; and Angela Tovar, 6th grade. Also, can’t forget our wonderful staff. Congrats to teacher Ruby Luna for being “Staff Member of the Month.” Bulldogs are #1.
Thank you Mojave Water Agency for promoting water education to middle school students. Melva Davis had a team of students, Problem Solver Titans, enter the “Curiosity Quest Problem Solvers” contest. The task: The future of the world’s most precious resource is in your hands. Can you help save the blue world? The students did a presentation on their new product, WELLO, an app and product providing resources for domestic well owners to ensure they are drinking safe water affordably. The Titans had a good presentation and have a chance to win $3,000 for their school.

This year, Westside Park has adopted the One School, One Book program. The mission: to create a culture of literacy in every home. Recently, at a reading assembly, all of the WSP students received a copy of the book, The Mouse and the Motorcycle, by Beverly Cleary. Students will be listening to the story and following along each day and are invited to take the book home to share it with their families. Students will participate in fun activities and trivia daily as it relates to the story. WSP is building the love of reading with their students, staff and families one page at a time.#aesdpride
