Remote Learning in the Event of Emergency Closure:

In the event that weather or other conditions arise that would typically result in a school closure, Addison CSD will pivot to fully remote synchronous learning. This will mean that all students and all instructional staff will follow their normal daily schedule of classes for the day using Zoom and teachers will provide learning via Zoom during these class times. Students and teachers will not be required to meet on Zoom during study halls or lunches. Additionally, teachers may end each scheduled class 10 minutes early to allow students an extended break between classes. Attendance will be taken by teachers for each class throughout the day. Should you have any questions about remote learning, please contact your building principal.

Thank you for your continued cooperation with these ever-changing requirements.

School mask mandate will expire March 2

On Friday, Feb. 25, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that they no longer recommend mask requirements for schools in communities with low to medium risk of COVID-19 spread.

On Sunday, Feb. 27, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that the statewide mask requirement in schools will be lifted on Wednesday, March 2.

In her announcement, Gov. Hochul indicated that the new CDC guidance was a factor in altering the state mandate. Counties, cities, and other entities may still choose to impose mask mandates that could affect schools and/or childcare facilities. The governor also indicated that rising transmission levels had the potential to trigger a return to a statewide mandate.

What does this mean for Addison?

Starting Wednesday, March 2, students, school staff and visitors will no longer be required to wear face coverings or masks in any of our school buildings or on school buses.

Mask wearing will be optional. Disposable masks will be available for those who choose to wear them.

Respecting individual masking choices for both students and staff is important to our District. Everyone’s preferences will be shown equal respect. Therefore, disrespectful behavior towards others will not be tolerated.

We will ask parents/guardians to communicate their preferences to their children. If a student arrives at school wearing or not wearing a mask, we will assume that this decision was made by the family.
As always, we continue to work with our local county health officials as COVID health and safety protocols evolve. We will continue to seek clarification regarding testing of symptomatic individuals, quarantine rules, and other COVID-19 prevention strategies.

Thank you for your ongoing partnership and commitment to the health and safety of our students and staff.

On March 22, 2022, Greater Southern Tier BOCES residents will have the opportunity to vote on a “no additional tax impact” capital improvement project. This project will be fully funded by leveraging New York State Building Aid, managing debt service payments and reallocating existing funds.

This $20 million project is another step toward enhancing the organization’s buildings and programs for current and future students by focusing on campus-wide equity and the replacement of aging infrastructure items.

Organizational-wide infrastructure improvements include the replacement of natural gas piping, underground electric, water piping and network fiber. In addition, the GST BOCES Wildwood (Hornell) and Coopers Plains campuses will have their sewer lines replaced. Most of these infrastructure items are original to the building and are not up to current standards. Having out-of-date infrastructure means more maintenance and the possibility of failure.

Currently, the Wildwood and Coopers Plains campuses do not have indoor athletic facilities and students have their physical education programs in classrooms. This project proposes gymnasium/auditorium additions to both sites, giving students the chance to exercise in an appropriate space. Having these new spaces will open up the possibilities to expand programming as well. Students can benefit from more physical education classes, recreational programs and performance space. The community can benefit from the ability to use the space for community events, meetings and Adult Education classes.

For more information on this project, please visit the GST BOCES website at https://www.gstboces.org.

Dear Families,

As we have returned from what was hopefully a restful and joyous recess, we are once again faced with the challenge of educating your children in the midst of an ever-changing landscape. Additionally, we are entering the depths of winter which, in our neck of the woods, brings its own set of challenges. Given these circumstances, we are working to be prepared for whatever comes our way, and this could include a move to fully-remote instruction.

At this time, we remain hopeful that this will not be necessary; however, we must be prepared. It is the intention of the District to only move in this direction if absolutely necessary due to significant impact on staffing due to illness/COVID and/or impending inclement, severe weather.

The District's plan, as of January 11, 2022 is as follows. This is subject to change, of course, if we have a difficult winter weather season.

The District has one full-day emergency closure day (traditional snow day) at its disposal due to our December 23 day off and in order to preserve a four day Memorial weekend in May. Therefore, if a second (or any thereafter) full closure day is implemented, the District will pivot to remote instruction for all students on that day, according to our plan for remote learning. This plan will allow us to NOT have to take back days during our school breaks that are already built into the school calendar.

Should this be the case, we will be able to shift to fully remote programing for all students efficiently. Remote instruction would mean students will follow their daily schedule remotely and instruction would be provided synchronously, meaning that instructional staff will interact directly with their assigned students at the assigned class times using appropriate technology such as Zoom or Teams.

The District believes that we will be able to make the decision to shift to remote instruction with at least a day’s notice in order to prepare our students by ensuring that they take home the devices and materials necessary at least a day prior to the shift. Additional information will come from the District and/or your child’s school/teacher.

Please know that this message is not intended to cause alarm, but to ensure that we are prepared if the need arises. The word “hope” has been used a few times in this message and, while hope is wonderful and necessary to have, it is not an effective plan. So, we are preparing, as despite the monumental efforts of our staff, families and students to adhere to the many health and safety protocols in place, the pandemic and/or severe winter weather might well force us to put our backup plans in place.

Thank you for taking the time to carefully read this message, as well as for your continued support of our schools.

At-Home Test Kits: If you have not picked up an at-home test kit, we still have them available for pickup at the District Office (lower level of Tuscarora Elementary School) any time between 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

COVID-19 Self Reporting Form 01/03/2022

COVID-19 Self Reporting Form

Dear Families:

Last week, the Governor of NYS identified a statewide goal of having as many students as possible tested for COVID-19 as school resumes on January 3. To accomplish this, the state has provided enough testing kits to test every single student in the state.

Pick up of tests for Addison students will be on Tuesday, January 4 from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM and from 4:00 PM-7:00 PM. Tests will be distributed again on Wednesday, January 5 from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM.

Pick up location will be at the District Office, located on the ground floor of the Tuscarora building. Two tests will be provided per student.

Delivery of tests to homes can be arranged for families. To request at-home delivery of test kits, please email Jim Peiffer at [email protected].

The Steuben County Public Health Department is asking that you report positive results to the following link: https://hipaa.jotform.com/213616404172044
Negative test results do not need to be reported. The District will be notified by the Steuben County Health Department of any positive results.

To be clear, there is no requirement that families test their children with these test kits, but New York State is encouraging families to do so.

This morning, an Addison Middle School student was injured in a hit and run accident while on her way to school as she crossed Main Street using a designated crosswalk. She was transported to the hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries. The Addison Central School District holds student safety as our primary focus and we are grateful to the Addison Police Department for their quick response to the situation. We understand that the driver has been located and charged.

After much thought, conversation, reflection and analysis, and considering the need for more family time and mental health breaks, we have decided that the Addison District will NOT be in session on Thursday, Dec. 23. The entire district will be closed. The past two years have been the most challenging for all of us, our students and families included, and we ask that you use this extra day for relaxation, family time, cookie baking, wreath making, caroling, or whatever fun activity comes to mind. Enjoy an early holiday surprise!
