Organizing Outdoor Adventures for Kids

02/19/2016

I must express my apologies for the lack of activity with O.A.K. We were so excited and enthused about the development of this group. However, as some of you already know, my husband accepted a job out of state a little while ago. Consequently, we will be moving out of New York. That, unfortunately, means that we are discontinuing O.A.K. and will have to start it up once we get settled in Tennessee.
My hope is that you all will take the time to explore the outdoors and activities on your own, with other interested families, sportsman clubs and other organizations. So many adventures awaiting you!

We submitted an article to the Addison Post and it appeared in the newspaper this past weekend. The response has been fantastic so far! We added many more families to our growing email list. And several more people offered to volunteer or lead an event! If you would like more information or would like to be added to the email list, please write to [email protected]

Our family has started a group called O.A.K. – Outdoor Adventures for Kids. We presented our ideas to the Board of the Addison Fish and Game Club on Tuesday night. They whole-heartedly embraced our desire to provide children with low or no cost programming to experience outdoor activities. Over the next year, we will host events for the children to learn about orienteering, geocaching, kayaking and canoeing, archery, bird identification, hunting safety, fishing (and tying flies), hiking and backpacking, camping, cycling, obstacle course, outdoor cooking, game dinners, gardening and much more! The program will also utilize New York’s Heitman-Mitchell Fund to introduce trap and s***t shooting to youth. Some events will be held at the Fish and Game Club but we will also meet at other locations. Each child will receive a program booklet and will earn reward stickers as each program is completed. We are also ordering T-shirts through CustomInk that can be purchased at cost.
The program will be voluntarily managed by Blake and Kim Johnson. We will be assisted by our family members, Dan and Colleen Worden, Brad and Megan Johnson and Ryan and Heather Diver. Other volunteers throughout the year would be greatly appreciated. We will also be seeking activity sponsors, donated and loaned materials, and additional site suggestions. Our family is eager to share our passions and knowledge.
Our mission statement - to organize recreational programs that encourage learning new skills, promote sportsmanship and teamwork, instill respect for the environment, and inspire a life-long interest to participate in outdoor adventures.

Questions, comments, requests for event calendars or a request to be placed on the email list can be sent to [email protected]. Please visit, “like” and “share” our new page, OAK – Outdoor Adventures for Kids. And feel free to share this post!
