Dear Hoosac Valley Families,

This message is to let you know that due to extreme cold weather tomorrow, we are calling a weather-related cancellation day. There will be no school tomorrow, Tuesday, January 11, 2022.

We are making this call early so you have as much time as possible to plan. We are making this decision based on the following:

According to the National Weather Service temperatures tomorrow will only increase from zero degrees at 6:00 am to 4 degrees at noon. Windchill temperatures are forecast to range between 15 degrees below zero to 10 degrees below zero during that same time. A two-hour delay will not improve temperatures.

The forecast temperatures can be dangerous for children. We are especially concerned about bus stop waits and students who walk to school.

Many classrooms in all schools keep their windows open to improve fresh-air airflow.

School buses are required to have every other window open to increase airflow for safety.

All of these factors together weigh on this being the safest decision we can make on such a frigid day.

High school students will receive further guidance on athletics from the athletic director.

I apologize for the inconvenience of this decision and hope that you and your family have a safe day tomorrow.

Sincerely,

Aaron Dean

Superintendent

Every year on March 2nd, Dr. Seuss' birthday, National Read Across America Day is observed. The yearly event is part of the National Education Association's reading initiative. On this day, children across the United States are encouraged to celebrate reading and invited to read no matter where they are.

Do you want to encourage your child to read?

*Make regular trips to the library. Knowing how to use a library and understanding its value encourages a love of reading and introduces your child to the services provided by libraries.

*Children copy the actions of the adults in their lives. Let them know that reading is cool by being seen reading a magazine, newspaper, or novel.

*Keep books with you wherever you go. Put them in your car, every room of your house, or carry them in your backpack.

*Read to your children. Reading aloud to children of all ages improves their vocabulary and language skills.

*Have your kids read to you too. You never know what you'll discover!
