✨Makinsie Pebley✨

Artist Statement:

This is a series of informational work exploring Choctaw culture. Through this work, I share Choctaw artistic practices and histories to teach others about my culture.

I am both a digital and analog artist. I primarily work digitally with procreate and illustrator to create digital illustrations and brochures. When creating physical objects, I use beadwork or basket weaving. I like using various textures and patterns from Choctaw culture in my work, like the diamond pattern. In my work, I enjoy using bold saturated colors that grab the viewers’ attention.

I am heavily influenced by Choctaw culture and implement it into my designs. The artists that influence me the most are Wendy Red Star, Hollis Chitto, and Teri Greeves. This group of artists are using indigenous culture and stories as parts of their work.

✨Senior Art Exhibit - Stuart Osborn ✨

Artist Statement:

My work explores ideas of indigeneity, the lack of access to quality legal aid, and gender roles and how humans operate within those frameworks. Wood is my primary medium since I can comfortably manipulate its form. I create utilitarian objects like handbags, stools, shelves, and tables to make the background spaces and items in my larger performances. Humor is important in my work and like most Native people, I take few things seriously and use humor to speak on difficult topics like living in a post-colonial society as the colonized population.

My exhibition “SH*TE Advice Clinic” explores the lack of legal knowledge and access to quality legal aid, especially shady characters that offer “alternative services”. My experience as a paralegal working with native elders and those interactions have fostered my interest in connecting directly with participants. A majority of my performance work involves more interpersonal connection during the ex*****on of my “services”. That is where my ersatz, metaphysical organization ‘S.H.I.T.E.’ (The Society of Helping Individuals Tackling Equality and satellite office Society of Helpful Individuals Taming Esotericism) comes in. We serve as every form of service provider with our reach spanning the realms of “haute couture” to soothsaying.

Campaign furniture, that is furniture that can be broken down and reassembled quickly and was traditionally used by the British Military in the 18th century, makes up the majority of the sculpture work. By appropriating the tools of colonizers, such as land acknowledgements and this kind of furniture, I examine the meaningless, apologetic practices and turn them into formalized documents to execute so that they may never be needed again.

Go check out the show today in the Pogue Art Gallery! Performance will be at 3:30pm 5/6!

✨ PATTERN STUDIES ✨

Senior Art Exhibit -

My work explores pattern as both a system and a disruption, using repetition to create structure while allowing irregularity to break it apart. I combine digital and traditional processes to build layered compositions that feel unpredictable and alive. Through this, I’m interested in how order and chaos can exist in the same visual space.

Ad/PR students were back in Sulphur today recording interviews and B roll footage for their work with the Sulphur Tornado Recovery Taskforce. Even though it was a long day, it was a fun day.
