Grain Bin Safety This video covers the basics of grain bin hazards, safety precautions, and best practices.Copyright 2021, University of Minnesota Extension, an equal opportu...
The farm is a great place to raise kids, but it’s also dangerous. About one-third of all farm accidents involve children, and a child dies in an agricultural accident approximately every three days. Prevent your child from becoming a statistic: make sure they understand on-farm hazards, only give them age-appropriate tasks, and make sure they are supervised.
Many of the everyday hazards on the farm are not always recognized. According to the National Children’s Center for Rural and Agricultural Safety and Health, 60% of ag-related injuries to children occur to a child who is not actively working on the farm, but may be watching or playing nearby. Talk to children about what makes certain areas of the farm dangerous, and ask them what they think they can do to keep themselves safe. Important areas to cover include machinery, livestock, grain bins and silos, and chemicals.
Join us tonight to learn about how to retrofit an existing barn to house your sheep and goats. Register at: z.umn.edu/sheepgoathousing

Share University horticulture expertise with your community: Become a Master Gardener Volunteer
2,800 Extension Master Gardeners volunteer across Minnesota, but like a caterpillar morphing into a butterfly, it’s a process to become one. Master Gardeners bring much experience with them and are hungry for more.
Master Gardener volunteers are from all walks of life. They engage their community through gardening to promote healthy landscapes, healthy people, and a healthy planet. Are you interested? Here’s how it’s done:
1. Join your county’s Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Program for an internship. Applications are due Oct. 1.
2. Complete the Master Gardener core course online. Core course topics include soils, trees, lawn care, weeds, fruits and vegetables, and pest management.
3. Share the wonders of gardening as an intern volunteering for 50 hours, while learning alongside an experienced mentor.
4. Celebrate! Start the next calendar year as an active Master Gardener volunteer in your community.
5. Volunteer at least 25 hours each year and continue your Master Gardener education.
