Grand Rapids Education Association Official group for GRPS educators in GREA. Stay informed, connected, and union strong.

The GREA represents over 1400 teachers and other educational professionals who work for the Grand Rapids Public Schools. We are affiliated with the Michigan Education Association and the National Education Association. As an organization dedicated to the principles of representative democracy, each building or program in the Grand Rapids Public Schools District is entitled to elect one delegate for every 15 members to serve as a GREA representative. It is the duty of each representative to serve their constituents faithfully as a confidant and advisor in labor-related issues, a liason between the members they represent and the administration, and as a voting member of the Representative Assembly. The Representative Assembly is held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, and it is there that the business of the Association is conducted on behalf of the members. As such, it is often the GREA representatives who are most "in the know" about what is taking place behind the scenes in the District. Your RA Delegate is expected to hold a brief meeting on the 4th Monday of each month to keep GREA members informed and answer any questions they may have. As such, basic questions or concerns should always be brought first to your Association representative. In addition, the GREA has officers and an Executive Board elected by the membership to assist in making Association decisions. Your Association President, Matthew Marlow, has been released from his teaching duties by the District in order to represent the GREA's 1400 members full time. He operates under the GREA contract, and receives the same wages and benefits as any other teacher. He is available at 957-4732, and is assisted by a full time Secretary (provided by GREA funds). The GREA office (4760 E Fulton, Ada, MI 49301) is staffed by a fully-trained, experienced labor relations professional (called "UniServ Directors") who assist in negotiating the master agreement, providing grievance representation, handling public relations, and carrying out the mission of the GREA ("Supporting the people who support our children"). The UniServ Director is provided by the MEA and are assisted by one full-time UniServ Assistants (also provided by MEA).

This Michigan Indigenous Peoples Day, we honor the Anishinaabek people and affirm what has always been true:

We are still here.

These are our ancestral lands. Lands our ancestors have cared for, protected, and prayed with. Our connection to these lands is not simply a connection to a place. It is a connection to who we are.

The blood and bones of our ancestors are in this soil. They are in these rivers and lakes. They are in the trees, the water, the wild rice, and the medicines. They are part of the land beneath our feet and the waters that sustain us.

There is no other place on this planet that we can return to and say, this is home.

This is home.

Today, we share these ancestral lands with our neighbors, who now call our home their home too. And still, our relationship with these lands remains. Our responsibilities remain. Our stories remain.

Our presence has never disappeared.

Our communities are still here.
Our Tribal Nations are still here.
Our languages, cultures, ceremonies, and traditions are still here.
Our people are still here.

We have endured. We have adapted. We have carried our ancestors with us through generations of change, displacement, and loss — and we are still here.

That is resilience.

This Indigenous Peoples Day, may we remember that being Indigenous is not only about where we come from.

It is about the relationship we carry with the land, with our ancestors, with one another, and with the generations yet to come. Happy Michigan Indigenous Peoples Day 2026.

A total of 15 candidates are vying for five seats with four-year terms up for during the Nov. 3 general election. One more candidate is running unopposed for a partial term.
