Last week we were blessed to have Former Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos visit our school to give a hero talk on her experience in Government and to help us answer the overarching question of our Government Quest ✨what does it mean to be a good citizen?✨

Lots of awesome hero questions and conversation!

The outdoors - the picnic tables, under the canopy, the blacktop, hidden in the bushes, in the tubes, in the woods, protected by their forts, and even in the trees - is also their studio 🌿

“Not all classrooms have four walls” is a big understatement for us and should be for all of our young heroes of the world!

We don’t correct heroes’ work - we empower them to observe, think critically, lean into peer edits and use world class examples as a resource for the correct answer.

This hero asked a guide if her work was correct. A simple response of “how can you check if it is?” lead her to find the resource needed, took some time to observe and then said “aha! I see it!” and made her correction. Those are the steps that lead to mastery learning over memorization - guiding them to confidence that they can find their answers, think for themselves and don’t need someone else to provide answers or work for them ✨

Mixed-aged environments allow beautiful opportunities like this one - where one of the youngest heroes of our school teaches the oldest heroes how to play a game, a game in which they went the next day and made themselves (thank you Mr. Nuttall!). Sometimes we only think of mixed-aged environments benefitting the youngest by being mentored by the oldest. While that’s one of the leading benefits, it’s not the only one. The opportunity for younger heroes to teach and impact those older than them builds their confidence, lays a foundation for leadership and humbles those around them.

“You have to color outside the lines once in a while if you want to make your life a masterpiece.” Albert Einstein

Coloring outside the lines allowed:
✨witnessing his unlocked creativity
✨a storyline illustrated throughout the picture
✨his idea to make small tears around the border of the page, making it look “ancient to match the story”

Step back, say less and watch the magic of their beautiful minds unfold ✨

✨New Quest✨Diving into horticulture as we make plans to build a garden and develop some woodworking skills.

A big thank you to ‘s very own .woodtv for coming in to give a Hero Talk this week! He shared what it’s like to be a reporter and answered hero questions to help them prepare for their upcoming broadcasting & news exhibition! Their bright minds and honest curiosity led the heroes to ask these awesome questions:

✨What is a tv station?
✨How do you decide what is news?
✨How do you know what you’re going to talk about?
✨How long does it take to record a video?
✨What do you do if you have a mind blank?
✨How do you make a video interesting enough to make people want to watch it?
✨Do you catch bad guys?
✨How do you make those old tv shows on the old tv boxes? (yes, giggles ensued)
✨Has anyone broken into your tv station?
✨Has anyone hacked into your computers?
✨Have you reported anything that was not true?

Thank you Mr. Albin for sharing your time, experience and advice to always report with honesty, truth and fairness and for challenging our heroes by asking ✨which is more important - the truth or your opinion?✨

📣Save the date📣

The heroes are working hard this broadcasting quest to explore many details surrounding broadcasting and news - yes, the good, the bad and the ugly. They will then try living in the spotlight for a moment as they put on a live news broadcast on November 17th at the exhibition. ES and IS running the cast and all the support that goes into it and Spark will participate by making a newspaper to be distributed at the exhibition along with showcasing their practical life skills they’ve been practicing by serving refreshments. Mark your calendar and stay tuned for more details!

A look into what recess can look like for a learner-driven environment:

✨embracing their freedom to be curiously creative!

Can you tell what they were experimenting with?

Photos from Journey Academy's post 09/23/2022

“We are born makers. We move what we’re learning from our heads to our hearts through our hands”

Studying and advocating for animals includes understanding how they’re made. Dissection day for our IS heroes touched on bravery, curiosity, biology, definitely stepping out of comfort zones and even some empathy as they made their first cuts and voiced their apologies.

A learner-driven environment can look like solving a few math challenges then flipping through a few pages of a book, then back to math, back to the book, and so on. ✨It’s their path✨

A week into our Animal Study Quest has us all in that “nose stuck in a book” vibe. Heroes will select an endangered animal, research how they could advocate for their animal and pitch their plan to save them✨

Follow along in stories to see it all play out!

We choose public exhibitions over exams.

At the end of every Quest, our heroes are challenged to show what they have learned to an audience of their peers, parents, and professionals.

The Heroes had a blast this morning during a special Sibling Day Design Thinking challenge. Heroes walked their siblings through prototyping, testing and improvement making steps in order to create paper helicopters!
