Great recitals today! Excellent work to all of our amazing students!!
One week ago I bought and set up a brand new ladder golf game thinking it would be fun for students and parents to play with outside while waiting for lessons. One week and there are only 2 sets of golf balls still in tact. 3 sets of golf balls are completely missing and one set is completely destroyed. I don’t understand how that happens in one week. This makes me so sad 😞
We bought brand new outdoor games for kids to play with and this is the third day they’ve been set up. We already have two game pieces missing from the ladder golf set. Please let us know if you find them!! (We had all the pieces when we set them up this morning)

SMSO Musician Spotlight: Kathryne Salo
Kathryne Salo is the Principal Flute for the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra. Born in Louisiana, she has travelled the world and landed here in sunny old Michigan.
Kathryne’s early interest in music came not through orchestra performances, but rather through ballet, when she had a ballet teacher whose mother was a principal dancer with the Paris Opera in the 1920s. She got around to trying out an instrument in the 5th grade. It was a hot August day in Louisiana, and she tried both trumpet and clarinet first, but the heat made them vibrate uncomfortably as she played, so she kept looking. When she picked up the flute and put it against her chin, it was so cool and refreshing that she immediately felt an “aaaaa” moment and decided flute was for her.
She played through high school and decided to head to Louisiana State for a Bachelor of Music degree. Not stopping there, she continued on to the Royal Academy of Music in London for an MA in Music Performance. Eager for more flute studies, Kathryne moved on to the University of Tennessee to get an MM in Flute Performance, teaching and coaching as she furthered her studies. And finally, she completed a DMA at Michigan State University to cap it all off. Wow and whew! That’s a lot of music in her brain.
While completing her degrees, she was able to coach flute ensembles, teach private lessons and flute methods courses, and participate in various ensembles. She found she had a real liking for sharing her experience with others and has incorporated that into her current professional career. She serves as Third Flute / Piccolo of Lansing Symphony, Instructor of Flute at Kellogg Community College, and she maintains a private lesson studio at Ada Conservatory of Music and in the Lansing area.
With a balance of chamber music, solo work, symphony performances, teaching, and lessons, she keeps pretty busy as she travels between Lansing, Grand Rapids, Battle Creek, and St. Joseph.
Clearly music moves her. When asked what advice she would give to someone wanting to pursue a career in music, she says, “Some things take a long time to figure out. But, persistence and the process of questioning is worth it.” Her favorite quote is, "It is a question of time, patience, and intelligent work," by Marcel Moyse.
Fun fact about Kathryne, she really enjoys spicy food – the hotter the better. She speculates that it all started when her mother went into labor at a crawfish boil and she was almost named Cayenna!
We are so thrilled to have Kathryne’s many talents at the SMSO!
