Love this feature on the 2024 Conference on Orality and Literacy in the Ancient World, hosted on Ohio Northern University's campus by Religion professor Ray Person! "Participants included scholars who are experts in Egyptian literature, the Bible, and Greek and Latin classics and represented eight different countries." ONU was the first teaching university to host the conference.

Ohio Northern University became the first teaching university to host the Conference on Orality and Literacy in the Ancient World, an international conference of literary scholars.

Participants of the Fifteenth Conference on Orality & Literacy in the Ancient World were on ONU’s campus June 26-29. The participants included scholars who are experts in Egyptian literature, the Bible, and Greek and Latin classics and represented eight different countries.

The conference was previously held in Hobart (1994), Durban (1996), Wellington (1998), Columbia (2000), Melbourne (2002), Winnipeg (2004), Auckland (2006), Nijmegen (2008), Canberra (2010), Ann Arbor (2012), Atlanta (2014), Lausanne (2016), Austin (2019), and Jerusalem (2021) at research universities.

Ray Person, Ph.D., professor of religion, has attended since 2012 and was the host for 2024 at ONU.

The conference theme was “Special Grammar.” Albert Lord used the phrase “special grammar” to refer to the verbal art used by South Slavic guslari, Homeric bards, and other performers of oral traditions.

"At ONU, Autumn majored in history with minors in public history/museum studies and literature...She believes one of ONU’s greatest benefits is its commitment to the humanities. 'Though these careers are not necessarily the money-makers, the work is important, and ONU consistently succeeds in preparing the next generation of cultural heritage professionals.'"

As senior manager of collections at the DC History Center, Autumn Kalikin is responsible for the preservation and care of archival and artifact holdings.

“I have been in this position since July 2022 and plan to retire here. It is my dream job.”

The DC History Center is the only community-based nonprofit focused on the District of Columbia’s history. Formerly the Historical Society of Washington DC, the Center has been collecting the city’s history since 1894.

“We are committed to preserving and elevating the stories of Washington's diverse people, neighborhoods, and institutions through free programming, K-12 education and research services.”

Autumn is passionate about her work largely because museum collections feel alive to her.

“I approach collections as organic beings deserving of care and autonomy.”

At ONU, Autumn majored in history with minors in public history/museum studies and literature.

She’s grateful for her ONU professors, who “pushed me to present my research at conferences and expand my network,” especially Dr. Robert Alexander, professor of political science, and retired professors Dr. Ray Schuck and Dr. John Lomax.

She believes one of ONU’s greatest benefits is its commitment to the humanities.

“Though these careers are not necessarily the money-makers, the work is important, and ONU consistently succeeds in preparing the next generation of cultural heritage professionals.”
