72 Children’s Books Later… Here’s What I’d Do Differently 📚

After publishing 72 children’s books, I've learned quite a few lessons.

Some I learned from success.

Some I learned from mistakes.

And some I simply had to learn by doing.

In Episode 6 of The Publishing Notebook, I answer a question I've thought about quite a bit:

If I had to start my publishing journey all over again, what would I do differently?

I share five things, including building an audience earlier, thinking in terms of series, understanding the difference between the reader and the buyer, creating better business systems, and spending more time marketing the books I had already published.

One lesson especially stands out:

Sometimes the opportunity isn't creating Book #73. Sometimes it's getting Book #7 in front of another 10,000 people.

📚 Please Don’t Use Reading as a Punishment.

Have you ever told a child:

“You’re in trouble. Go to your room and read.”

Or…

“No video games tonight. You’re going to sit there and read instead.”

It sounds harmless. After all, reading is GOOD for children.

But we may unintentionally be teaching them:

I got in trouble = I have to read.

And over time, reading can start feeling like the punishment.

In Episode 6 of Raising Readers™: Practical Literacy Tips That Work, I explain the important difference between building a reading habit and using reading as a consequence.

One builds a habit.

The other can make reading feel like a punishment.

We want our children to associate books with discovery, adventure, imagination, curiosity, laughter, and enjoyment, not with being in trouble.

So this week's Raising Readers Challenge is simple:

If your child needs a consequence, choose something else.

Let the consequence be the consequence. Reading doesn't need to become part of the punishment.

Because if we want children to love reading, we have to be careful what feelings we attach to it.

When we raise readers…we raise leaders.
