The PSC group had an adventure on their weekly nature walk today! They ventured to Winter Island in the Big Woods. The island is only accessible in winter when the wetlands are frozen. The children had a great time making snow angels and trying to look through the ice. They also saw animal tracks and maybe the trail left by a beaver!

Our ITC staff took a day to engage in professional development before returning from winter break.

At Drumlin Farm, we walked along the trails while talking about the importance of nature-based learning and being "stewards of the land." We discussed how we can inspire children to care and protect the natural environment. As frequent visitors of the conservation land surrounding ITC, this proved to be a valuable learning experience.

Back at ITC, teams participated in "The Brain Architecture Game," which is a game that illustrates the importance of secure, responsive relationships for every child's healthy development and the critical role of early childhood education and care.

"Do the birds not know what kind of bird they are?" This question was posed by one of the PSC children after observing a baby woodpecker on the playground and prompted a bird exploration. The PSC children have done birdwatching on their own playground, at the birdfeeder outside of their classroom, on the other ITC playgrounds, and on a walk in the neighborhoods close to ITC. The group was also gifted a Bird Buddy smart birdfeeder that takes photos and videos of the birds that visit. These have been used with the PSC projector to enable the children to see the birds up close and personal, and much bigger than life size! The children are learning about the sizes of the different birds, their beaks, and what they eat. They also notice eagles flying over ITC, hawks in trees next to the playground, and many other birds in the trees around ITC. If you want to identify a bird, just stop by the PSC room!

"The sky is blue," a child said yesterday. "And tomorrow, it's going to rain," a teacher replied. "We will wear our rain suits and go outside," the child said. "And we will splash in puddles!" another child added.

That is exactly what we did today.

Many of the clothing and blankets you find for the baby dolls at ITC were made by members of our community. When a child from 2/3s noticed the babies didn't have hats, one of our resource teachers spent part of her weekend making hats and some extra blankets for the dolls. The children were delighted to find them on Monday morning! Not only did they become hats for the dolls, one child used them as a sleeping space for small figurines.

Many classrooms at ITC compost to help reduce waste and encourage sustainable practices. Composting is the process by which organic matter decomposes into soil. This includes food waste and leaves. Toddlers and preschoolers help collect food waste at snack time. Then, they head outside and dump the waste into the composter before using their big muscles to turn it. Over the winter, it will transform into soil we can use in our garden boxes in the spring!

Our classrooms across the building often use pumpkins and gourds as loose parts in the fall. They are used in explorations, pretend play, art, and motor work. What else can you do with a pumpkin?

The Infant and Toddler program held their Parent Night this week. Teachers presented information on routine and curriculum, and some classrooms participated in activities like family photos books or displays for the classrooms. Most importantly, Parent Night allows parents to get together as a community. The children contributed by making yummy treats for their parents to enjoy!

The PSC group walked to the West Acton Fire Station today. The children saw the fire fighter's gear, watched the jaws of life lift a boat trailer, went into the back of the ambulance, and got to "drive" the fire truck! The group even had a visit from the School Resource Officer who showed the children the police car! It was a great trip for the PSC children!

The children in 2/3s have been interested in trains, especially the train that passes close to ITC multiple times a day. The children can hear and see the train from a distance in their classroom or on the playground. The teachers decided to take a walk to the railroad crossing to get a closer look at the crossing gates and the train going by. One child even pointed out a road sign with railroad tracks on it. It was their lucky day, as they also stopped to observe some people working on a roof in the neighborhood.
