Yes, I need to attend classes, take tests and finish assignments. But todayβs world is different. Allow me to work where I want to work and in the hours that work best for me and my family.
Due to a severe and long-lasting illness as a young child, Ashley lost most of her hearing, some of her sight and she has frequent seizures. But that doesnβt slow her down β not even in her CTE Culinary Arts classes. βAshley is a super star,β says teacher Chef Shanel Burnias. βSheβs watching me demonstrate a skill, looking at her American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter and performing the cooking technique β all at the same time! Sheβs so focused.β
Ashleyβs mom, Melissa, points out that while the Culinary Arts program is a fun elective for some students, or the start to a foodservice career for others, for Ashley, itβs about learning important life skills. She needs to know how to watch for the things she canβt hear in the kitchen. βSheβs a visual learner, so Chef Burnias makes sure to explain and teach so that Ashley can master the lessons. Ashley is now helping me prepare family dinners and she recently made a batch of cookies all by herself, which was a milestone for her,β she said. βChef instilled her confidence, which has been terrific to help her overcome her shyness.β
Like all the teachers and counselors at Learn4Life, Chef Burnias is used to working with students who have all sorts of learning challenges. Our personalized model is tailored to each student and the way they learn best, which has been ideal for Ashley. Her elementary school was a DHH (deaf and hard of hearing) and she loved school, but in junior high, everything changed.
βI didnβt like going to the regular junior high school. There were too many kids and pressures, and I felt lost because I couldnβt follow conversations,β Ashley said. βI was bullied for being different.β Plus, with her compromised immune system, she was frequently sick and had to go back into the hospital.
βI love Learn4Life. I am not worried about my credits and can work at my own speed. The teachers help me understand when I feel lost,β she said.
βMy teachers are the bestβ¦they care about how I feel and are especially understanding when I miss conversations. My school interpreter helps me so much. At first, I was shy, but she made me laugh and helped me feel better.β
I am a human being. Not a statistic or grade point average. Feeling safe at school is a right, not a privilege. At π

At Learn4Life every day is graduation day π We are so proud of the and are excited for the Class of 2024 going into this new school year!
Enjoy this 2023 graduation highlight reel our awesome team whipped up!
Traditional school for Matthew was challenging. In middle school, students would often pick on him. He tried hard to avoid these situations and instead focused on himself and his education, but it was always a difficult distraction. He was ready to start fresh in traditional high school, but then felt held back from opportunities that he wanted to explore such as being employed and attend college simultaneously.
His two siblings had graduated from Learn4Life, so Matthew was familiar with our programs and services, such as the college dual enrollment program and a flexible schedule. He knew it would help him fulfill his goals, so he decided to enroll at Learn4Life in his sophomore year.
At Learn4Life, Matthew was able to get a semester ahead and complete 12 college units. The ability to work on his own schedule and learn at his own pace allowed him the added freedom to pursue other interests. He joined the Police Explorers program and worked both full-time and part-time jobs at various times until his graduation. The Learn4Life program suited him well since he wanted to work and earn money while in school. Matthew believed it was important for him to pay his own way and to show his parents that he had both the ability and the willingness to work.
Now a Learn4Life graduate, Matthew works part-time for the city and attends his local community college. He is proud to help support his family financially and credits the staff at Learn4Life for helping him do that. He plans to pursue a career in law enforcement and eventually hopes to work for the federal government with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
"Learn4Life many staff members really pushed me to succeed, to focus on school and graduate. I'm in a good spot in my life right now with the help of Learn4Life."

If Iβm allowed to make a mistake, I can learn from it and grow.
In high school, making mistakes isn't a setback, it's a stepping stone. Learning from these moments fosters resilience, problem-solving, and personal growth. π±πͺ
π Fail Forward: Each mistake is a chance to evolve, adapt, and emerge stronger than before.
π§ Building Resilience: Overcoming challenges sharpens your ability to bounce back and face future hurdles.
π Life Lessons: Mistakes teach practical skills and wisdom that textbooks can't match.
Embrace the journey of learning, growing, and becoming your best self. You've got the power to turn missteps into your biggest successes! ππ
βIt was a chance meeting that brought Hayley to Learn4Life San Diego
She was 17 years old, taking care of herself and her little brother because their parents who suffered from addiction were unable to properly provide for them.
She had been kicked out of school for not attending regularly and was turned away from other schools because she had no permanent address to provide.
Hayley happened to be at a community services event, and that evening two staff members from Learn4Life were there to talk about the school.
Hayley enrolled the next day.

Actually, I demand the truth.
Even if I am not happy with the truth, my teachers and principals must be authentic and honest with me.
School should be a relationship, not an institution.
A relationship built on trust, acceptance, communication, support and reciprocity.
At Learn4Life, we prioritize giving students the attention and respect they deserve, both inside and outside the classroom. π¬ π
