In our blog post, Name ItThe Other Epidemic, authors Jeffrey Levin and Chief Justice John Broderick emphasize a pressing issue in education today: the rampant anxiety affecting our students. While the movement to teach Social Emotional Learning SEL skills is crucial, it is vital to recognize that this approach alone is not enough to tackle the enormity of the problem. Before we can effectively teach SEL, we must first confront the underlying anxiety that many students are experiencing. This requires open dialogue with students about their feelings and the challenges they face, as well as a significant increase in family involvement in these conversations. By collaborating with families and addressing anxiety head-on, we can create a more effective framework for teaching SEL skills. We urge educators and school leaders to reflect on the insights shared in this blog post and consider how they can integrate these practices into their professional development and student support strategies. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of our students.
