ATTENTION UPCOMING 9th GRADERS --- JUST A REMINDER

All students entering the 9th grade at Arcadia High School for the 2023-2024 school year must verify their proof of residency before student schedules are issued. Families must provide three (3) or more of the following documents to determine residency. These documents must be less than 2 months old.

-Mortgage Statement or copy of a deed showing ownership of property where the parent/guardian and child are residing.
-Copy of a signed lease or agreement for the property where the parent/guardian and child are residing.
-A notarized statement from the owner of the property where the parent/guardian and child are residing listing all family members residing on the property.
-A copy of a current utility bill (i.e. gas, electric, water/sewer, cable or satellite, phone, cell phone) indicating the family has a current account for the address the parent/guardian and child are residing.
-Copy of the lease or rental agreement indicating that utilities are supplied by the landlord where the parent/guardian and child are residing.
-Other bill confirming residency, car insurance, car registration, credit card statement, etc.
-Copy of parent's pay stub, indicating the address where the parent/guardian and child are residing.
-Copy of parent's Voter Registration card indicating the address where the parent/guardian and child are residing.
-Welfare/child care records indicating the address where the parent/guardian and child are residing.
-Federal, State, or Municipal records indicating the address where the parent/guardian and child are residing.
-Financial (loan, credit, investment, etc.), Medical, Military records indicating the address where the parent/guardian and child are residing.

Residency can be verified Mondays through Thursday from 8AM-5PM at Arcadia High School. Families are encouraged to complete this process before August 18, 2023. Failure to do so will result in your student not having a schedule on the day of Freshman Orientation on Wednesday, August 30, 2023.

The ACPS high school GEAR UP teams are ready to meet our class of 2027! Ms. Edwards, Ms. Cody, and Ms. Giddens visited San Francisco this week for the annual GEAR UP conference. We've got some great ideas to share with you as you enter 9th grade!

Our GEAR UP students had another successful camp last week! Check out the pictures of our students at Richard Bland College with the BrainSTEM staff.
Picture 1, students were introduced to Brandon, Nick, and John of BrainSTEM and encouraged to share their brilliance and future ambitions. Then, they began in teams to create bouncy balls to see who could design the bounciest one as well as air pollution filters to see which design would filter out the most pollutants. The next day was a full one! Picture 2, students had to calculate molarity and practice following directions to get the right recipe to make the best chocolate chip cookies. Then, the watched a chemical reaction take place as they made their own ice cream and watch a liquid turn to a solid. They had a great admissions tour from Richard Bland College. Then, they finished the night with games and activities outside including making S'mores, safely. In Picture 3, they worked on posters to display a scientist that inspired them, share what's important to them, and how they'll positively impact their community. Throughout all three days, students became energized through team building, outdoor activities.
Thank you to Ms. Leininger and Mr. Mason for chaperoning this event and thank you to the SCHEV staff for making it possible!!

The first GEAR UP Summer Camp at George Mason was an overall success! Students had fun and came away with a positive experience. We hope that students carry the tools they learned from the Focus trainers with them next year including the importance of SMART goals, communication, and teamwork.

Here is a further description of the images above:
Day 1) Students were divided up and into teams with people from different schools. They did several team building activities. At the end of the day, they participated in a dance contest with their friends.
Day 2) Students participated within their teams on additional team building and creative thinking activities including a grid walk activity where students had to communicate with one another without speaking. Other activities included Focus Olympics, and a campus wide scavenger hunt. We also took a group photo at the George Mason statute.
Day 3) Students started their day with a pirate-themed energizer, set SMART goals, "graduated" and received certificates. Lastly, the camp enthusiast stars were awarded.

It's almost time for our Spring SOL tests. Our friends at Arcadia High School are busy putting together some treats for us. Thanks to these seniors for showing off their Firebird Pride and helping out our GEAR UP students!

Nandua Middle School 8th grade families were able to chat with Ms. LaKeisa Brown about all the wonderful opportunities for classes, duel enrollment, programs like SOAR and Project Horizon, and hands on training programs at Eastern Shore Community College.

Then our families were able to grab dinner from a local food truck!

We would like to give a shout out to Market Street Grill for the fabulous lunches put together for our trip to Eastern Shore Community College! The sandwiches and chips were great, but the brownies and cookies were the BEST part! Yum! We are happy to have them as a community partner.

Our 2nd annual College Spirit Week continued today as Chincoteague and Tangier visited Eastern Shore Community College.
Students got to speak with the college's President and other representatives before touring campus.
And no college visit is complete without lunch! Special thanks to Market Street Grill in Onley for feeding our students this week.😀

The GEAR UP fun doesn't stop when the school year ends! This year our Class of 2027 has the opportunity to attend one of two summer camps!
Skills Summit will be held at George Mason University from June 12-14, while BrainSTEM will be held June 27-29 at Richard Bland College. Participants for each event will stay on campus and as always, there is no cost to attend!
Interested students should get an application from their Site Coordinator. Completed applications are due April 12, 2023.

Today we took one step towards the future! Our 8th graders looked at what high school life would entail! Mr O’Shea from Arcadia High School was joined by his guidance team to share about Firebird Life. Mr. Gardner, along with his student advisors, shared about Nandua High School. It is hard to believe how close our 8th grade Gear Up students are to high school!

We are gearing up for College and Career Week with Spirit Week. Mark your calendars for this fun week!

Field Trip permission slips are heading home for our 8th graders in our Gear Up class! Please be on the lookout for a JA inspire permission slip and Eastern Shore Community College.

2023 JA Inspire Experience JA Inspire returns for its fourth year, bringing together businesses and local students in hopes of creating an early launch into their future careers. Students will participate in hands-on activities, often using equipment or tools used on the job, and interact with several notable business leaders...

Our second group of 8th grade GEAR UP Virginia students have arrived at UMES (University of Maryland Eastern Shore). The tour guides were fabulous! The learning was plentiful and our lunch gave us a perfect taste of college!

On Tuesday, AMS and CHS GEAR UP students visited UMES. Special thanks to our great tour guides!
On Thursday, NMS and TCS will have the opportunity to visit, stay tuned to see their adventures!

All permission slips must be returned by February 3, 2023, so that transportation can be arranged.

ACPS GEAR UP students will be visiting UMES. Arcadia Middle School Panthers and Chincoteague Middle/High School students will visit on 2/14, while Nandua Middle School and TCS students will visit on 2/16.

The bus will leave school at 8:45 am and return to school at 2:00. Students will tour the campus and eat lunch at the dining hall.

A new date has been selected! ACPS GEAR UP students will be visiting UMES next month. AMS and CHS students will visit on 2/14, while NMS and TCS students will visit on 2/16. We need new permission slips completed for each student who will be attending.

The bus will leave school at 8:45 am and return to school at 2:00. Students will tour the campus and eat lunch at the dining hall.

It is GEAR UP Week! The Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) State Grant is a seven- year federal initiative designed to increase early college awareness, readiness, and success for students. Tomorrow we are celebrating POWER WEEK! We are starting by wearing a shirt to symbolize you. It can be a shirt that describes you, shares something you like, or is just your favorite shirt! Can't wait to see all the great shirts that symbolize the class of 2027!

Next week starts Gear Up's Power Week for our Class of 2027! We are excited to conclude the week with a field trip to prospective colleges.

Last Gear Up Open House Day! Great way to end our 8th grade Open Houses with Arcadia Middle School. Thanks to all the parents who came out to find out more about Gear Up, get their schedules, lockers, and meet their fabulous 8th grade teachers.

Today kicked off a GREAT Gear Up Open House for Chincoteague's Class of 2027! We cant wait to see the class of 2027 at Nandua and Arcadia.

Our team is excited and ready to share more Gear Up information with you! Monday is Open House for our 8th grade Gear Up students on Chincoteague. Tuesday the team will be at Nandua Middle School.
