Safe Schools Maryland Tip Line - Always Available, Always Anonymous

Superintendent Reminds Families of Resources for Social/Emotional Support and Safe Schools Maryland Tip Line

Dear Parents and Families,

As you know, the State Superintendent has announced that all Maryland schools will be closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. Even though instruction is not occurring in person, the school system has a number of resources available to help you and your children at this difficult time. In order to help support the emotional needs of our families, there are many people that are ready to respond to your needs. These include school social workers, school psychologists, school counselors, school nurses, a pupil personnel worker, and a mental health coordinator. You can reach out to your school principal or to Ms. Lindsey Strubin, Pupil Personnel Worker, for assistance. Ms. Strubin can help coordinate resources for you and can be reached at 301-334-8915. We know that the statewide school closure has presented a number of challenges for our students and parents. These challenges may be compounded with a loss of income, daycare issues, and many other things that each of us is trying to juggle. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us for help!

If you wish to remain anonymous, I encourage you to access the Safe Schools Maryland Tip Line. When schools were in session, this tip line could be used to report a range of issues, including bullying. Even though learning is occurring in a different format, your child may be experiencing cyberbullying or may be struggling with a number of emotional issues. The tip line is active and you may report any concern anonymously. We will continue to thoroughly investigate each report, just as we do when school is in session.

Thank you,
Barbara Baker
Superintendent

THE SAFE SCHOOLS MARYLAND TIP LINE REMAINS ACTIVE

Students and Community Members Should Continue to Anonymously Report School Safety Concerns Such as Cyber Bullying or Students Struggling Emotionally During COVID-19 Crisis

Baltimore, MD – As a result of the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic response, school buildings are largely empty, and schools have transitioned to online learning environments. With families isolated at home and students unable to physically attend school, Maryland students are facing new and diverse challenges. During this time, the Safe Schools Maryland Tip Line becomes an increasingly vital tool to ensure the safety and well-being of Maryland students.

Whether students are experiencing cyberbullying or are concerned about one or more students capable of self-harm or violence, the Safe Schools Maryland Tip Line, which is administered by MCSS, is anonymously accessible 24/7 by phone at 1-833-MD-B-SAFE (1-833-632-7233), online at safeschoolsmd.org, and by downloading the free app via the App Store or Google Play.

"As we implement our continuity of learning, the safety, health, and well-being of Maryland students remain the Maryland State Department of Education's first priority," said Karen B. Salmon, Ph.D., State Superintendent of Schools and Chair of the School Safety Subcabinet. "We encourage students and families to make use of the Safe Schools Maryland Tip Line, as well as the many emotional support and counseling resources available through each local school. To our students, please know that we are here for you during this very challenging time."

“Though much has changed in recent weeks, the Safe Schools Maryland Tip Line remains available to anonymously report concerns regarding the safety and well-being of all Maryland's students,” said Kate Hession, Executive Director of the Maryland Center for School Safety (MCSS). MCSS provides grants and school safety training and support to public, non-public special education, and private schools throughout Maryland.

To increase awareness of the tip line during this difficult time, MCSS is also sharing a short public service announcement (PSA) acknowledging students still face numerous challenges, many of which they would normally share with teachers, staff members, or fellow students in-person at school. The full PSA can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cN5KoetBsFM&feature=youtu.be.

“Student safety and student well-being are at the foundation of all that we do. It’s essential to remind students that they are not alone during this period and that we will get through this together,” added Hession.

About the Maryland Center for School Safety

The Maryland Center for School Safety is an independent unit within the State Department of Education. To provide a coordinated and comprehensive policy for school safety in Maryland, the Center collaborates with local school systems, law enforcement agencies, State and local government, community organizations, parents, and other groups. With those partners, the Center disseminates information on best practices, programs, and resources; provides grants, technical assistance, and training; collects, analyzes, and integrates Statewide data; and promotes interagency efforts to ensure safe schools.

[05/05/20]   GCPS Announces Date of Last Day for the 2019-2020 School Year

The last day of school has been officially set as Thursday, June 11. The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) has approved the 5-day waiver request that was submitted in April. Therefore, students will attend 175 days for the 2019-2020 school year instead of the required 180 days. The last day will not be affected by the statewide closure. June 11, 2020, will be the last day for students if schools re-open on May 18 or if the closure is extended. The last day for seniors is May 27.

If State Superintendent, Dr. Karen Salmon, extends the statewide closure, we will announce a schedule so that students may retrieve personal items from their school. Dr. Salmon has advised all local superintendents that no students are to be in school buildings or congregating on school grounds. This mandate has been in effect since the closure began on March 16 of this year.
