Thirteen-year-old Gavin Mabes, of South Brunswick, New Jersey, was with some middle school friends at a skatepark when they encountered Carter Bruynell, who was there with his mother celebrating his fifth birthday. Big groups of older kids might spell trouble for Bruynell, who is on the autism spectrum, but what Mabes and his friends did initiated a most unexpected friendship. We are delighted to announce the Maryland state finalists for the 2019 “Letters About Literature” contest! Congratulations to Taylor Hummel and Kambria Kyle from NMS!
On behalf of the Maryland Center for the Book at Maryland Humanities and the Library of Congress, we would like to thank every student who participated in this year’s competition. We received 1,420 entries from Maryland students this year.
Letters About Literature Maryland state finalists will be recognized at our awards ceremony on Saturday, May 4 at the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Auditorium at Mercy High School in Baltimore. The ceremony will begin at 11:00 a.m.
Special thanks to Mrs. Kim Thomas for her beautiful cake displays! Kim made a cake that featured some of Mr. Schu’s favorite books!
Thank you to Scholastic and Mr. Schu for a magical day! In addition to Mr. Schu’s dynamic presentation, they provided a lunch from Casselman Cafe for the NMS staff and each student will receive a free book of their choice! ❤️📚❤️📚

Tim Brands, a 5th grade student at Accident Elementary, and Walter Brands, a 6th grade student at Northern Middle School, have been notified by the National Geographic Society that they are two of the semifinalists eligible to compete in the 2019 National GeoBee Maryland State Competition. The contest will be held at Bullis School in Potomac, Maryland, on Friday, March 29, 2019.
This is the second level of the National Geographic GeoBee competition, which is now in its 31st year. School GeoBees were held in schools for 4th – 8th grade students throughout the state to determine each school champion. School champions then took an online qualifying test, which they submitted to the National Geographic Society.

NHS/Garrett College Dual Enrollment Opportunity Session
Garrett College specialists will be at NHS on Monday, March 11th at 5:30 pm in the high school Media Center to explain the benefits of taking college-level dual enrollment classes while still in high school. This information session to explain how Northern students can earn college credits while still in high school is open to all students in 8th – 11th grade and their parents. Well over 100 county students are currently enrolled in dual-enrolled courses in a variety of subjects. These classes provide a significant head start on college and career, improve degree affordability, reduce student debt and are proven to increase graduation rates. All students and parents are encouraged to attend this informative session regardless of academic intent.
