Sometimes the challenge isn’t that a student can’t learn.

It’s that the environment they’re learning in doesn’t fit the way their brain works.

This week’s Northshore Autism Resource Hub spotlight is 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐲 in Abita Springs.

Brighthouse Learning Academy, LLC focuses on 𝐭𝐰𝐢𝐜𝐞-𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥, or 𝟐𝐞, students in grades 5–12. These are students who may be gifted academically while also navigating learning differences such as ADHD, dyslexia, or autism.

That combination can sometimes leave students falling into a gap. They may be very capable in one area while needing significant support in another, and a traditional classroom doesn’t always know what to do with both at the same time.

That’s why I think resources like this are important for Northshore families to know exist.

Last week we held our second annual Student Government campaign and elections! Last year, our Student Government played a huge role in student life and fundraising through our Student Store, parking lot signs, bench with placard, and other projects around the school. We are so proud of these students’ leadership, creative ideas, and actionable follow-through!

Our first Parent Night this year features Dr. Debbie Troxclair, who wrote the book on 2e learners – literally! She will be speaking on her book, “Twice-Exceptional Education: Connecting Gifted and Special Education” this Thursday at 5:00pm. If you can’t make it in person, be sure to tune in via Zoom. Brighthouse 10 Year Celebration! 🎉

WOW!!! Our 10-Year Celebration was one for the books! It was incredible to see everyone that came out to support our school and the impact we are making on the 2e community! From old friends who helped us get started years ago, to new families and businesses we have the privilege of working with today, we had a blast sharing about all our big milestones. We love getting to connect with you all and hear about the many ways we are all working together to shape these young minds – and how they are shaping us! Here’s to many more years growing and learning together!

Our next new teacher is a familiar face around Brighthouse – Dr. Kirsten, our new 9-12th Math and Science teacher! Dr. Kirsten worked last year as a para at BLA and has become comfortably familiar with our students and environment, creating trust and friendship with everyone. With her background of a Ph.D. in Chemistry, and experience in and a love of teaching, she is the perfect fit for our school, and we are lucky to have her join the team!

Welcome to the team, Ms. Gabbi, who is our Home Economics teacher! Ms. Gabbi is creative, relatable, and up for any new adventure! She has already been a great leader in helping our students learn new skills, discover new hobbies, and hone their craft!
