Acupuncture has been practiced for thousands of years, but our understanding of how it works continues to grow.

Researchers continue exploring how acupuncture influences the body's nervous system, inflammatory pathways, connective tissue, and biochemical signaling. As new discoveries emerge, they help explain the physiological effects that patients and practitioners have observed for generations.

Check out this article about the current state of acupuncture in the US, including its growing evidence base, professional training and regulation, clinical applications, and integration into conventional healthcare: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11472758/

Ancient wisdom and modern science aren't at odds, they're helping us better understand why acupuncture can be such an effective treatment for many patients.

One of the biggest misconceptions about acupuncture?

People think the needles are large or painful.

Acupuncture needles are incredibly thin, about the width of a human hair, and are designed specifically for therapeutic use.

Most patients describe treatment as relaxing, and many even fall asleep during their session.

Healthcare never stands still.

That's why continuing education is so important.

Licensed healthcare professionals continually expand their knowledge as new research emerges and best practices evolve. We advocate for acupuncture professionals to complete 30 CEUs per 2-year licensure cycle, as is required by many medical professions.

Lifelong learning helps providers deliver safer, more effective care.

Every healthcare decision should begin with one question:

"What keeps patients safest?"

At APA of PA, that question guides everything we do.

We support education, transparency, and rigorous professional standards because every Pennsylvanian deserves safe, informed care.

Never had acupuncture before?

Here's what a first appointment often includes:

• A conversation about your health history
• Questions about your symptoms and goals
• An individualized treatment plan
• Time to ask questions
• A relaxing acupuncture treatment

Every patient is different, and every treatment plan should be personalized.

So… what does APA of PA actually do for you? 👋

That's a great question! There’s a lot happening behind the scenes to support acupuncture and the practitioners who make up our profession.

🏛️ Advocacy & Legislation
Yes, legislation is a major part of what we do. It’s one of the most important ways we can create meaningful change for acupuncture in Pennsylvania, and we’re working to make sure our profession has a voice.

📚 Education & CEUs
We’re working to bring you more educational opportunities, both online and in person. Members can also earn CEUs by contributing to the work of our organization.

🤝 Community & Connection
We’re creating opportunities for practitioners to connect through Zoom events, educational programming, and other community-building efforts. We want APA to be a place where PA acupuncturists can connect with one another, not just an organization you pay dues to.

💻 Resources for Practitioners
We’re continually working to expand the educational content and resources available to our members.

🎉 Member Discounts & Benefits
APA members have access to discounts and benefits through both APA and the American Society of Acupuncturists (ASA). Check out our website to see what’s currently available:
https://www.apapenn.com/about-us-faq/
Scroll down to “What are member benefits?”

And this is just the beginning. We’re a member-driven organization, and the more practitioners who get involved, the more we can do.

Join us. Get involved. Help shape the future of acupuncture in Pennsylvania.

Let's clear up a few acupuncture myths.

❌ It's only for pain.
❌ There's no research.
❌ It's just a trend.

The reality?

Acupuncture is a comprehensive healthcare system with thousands of years of clinical practice and a growing body of modern research.

While acupuncture is well known for helping with pain, research continues to explore its role in areas such as stress, sleep, digestive health, women’s health, and overall well-being.

Acupuncture bridges traditional wisdom and modern evidence to support a more complete approach to patient care.

Many patients continue acupuncture even after they feel better.

Why?

Because wellness isn't simply the absence of disease.

Many people use acupuncture to support resilience, recovery, stress management, and healthy aging.

Needle-based procedures require knowledge.

Understanding anatomy, physiology, safety protocols, infection control, contraindications, and adverse event management helps protect patients.

Acupuncture education includes comprehensive training in these areas, along with diagnosis, treatment principles, and clinical practice under supervision.

Because when it comes to inserting needles into the body, education matters.
Patient safety matters.
