Before you judge the teenager wearing a hoodie in 85-degree weather… PAUSE ⏸️
🦋Yes — safety concerns in communities are real.
🦋Yes — people deserve to feel safe.
But sometimes what looks “suspicious” is actually survival, shame, anxiety, or an attempt to avoid humiliation.
THAT MASK?
It may not be about hiding identity.
It may be about hiding the fact they can’t afford a haircut.
It may be covering uneven grooming, insecurity, or the fear of being laughed at by peers.
THAT HOODIE?
It may not be about being “up to no good.”
It may be covering stained clothes, limited uniforms, or the reality that laundry has not been done yet in a household already carrying too much.
Some young people would rather overheat physically than be exposed emotionally.
And when we only respond with criticism, suspicion, or ridicule, we miss what their behavior may actually be communicating:
“I don’t want to be embarrassed.”
“I don’t want to stand out.”
“I’m trying to protect myself.”
Not every hoodie is danger.
Not every mask is defiance.
Sometimes it’s depression.
Sometimes it’s poverty.
Sometimes it’s instability.
Sometimes it’s silent coping.
Awareness requires us to hold both truths:
community safety AND compassion.
Our youth communicate long before they have the words to explain what hurts.
