Today, our 3rd Grade Families were on a Secret Ninja Mission during their Learn with Me event. Together, they had to use the distributive property to multiply and complete the mission. ✅🤩

We are so thankful for all of our amazing Substitute Educators that help make WSJ a great place to work and learn! We couldn't do it without you!

Our very own, Julie McCarthy, was recognized as a Support Service Professional Super Star! APGFCU surprised her on Wednesday with a check to help us celebrate!

She was nominated by Stephanie Bartholomew, who had this to say about her impact on our school community:

"Mrs. Julie McCarthy is someone who has an immeasurable positive impact on our school community and beyond. Her official role at William S. James is STRIVE paraeducator, but many students, families and community members know her as 'The Dancing Traffic Cone!'

Like many other support staff at schools across the county, Mrs. McCarthy has a morning and afternoon duty assigned to her to assist with the safe and organized arrival and dismissal of our students. For the last four years, she has requested to have crosswalk duty. Directing cars in and out of our parking lot and stopping traffic for students to safely use the crosswalk is her official job description, but Mrs. McCarthy decided that she wanted to brighten the days of each and every student that crossed her path, so she purchased a bright orange traffic cone costume and a portable speaker. Our community is greeted each morning & sent off each afternoon, rain or shine, by a smiling, dancing, 6-foot-tall traffic cone!

While some would gripe and complain about having an outdoor morning AND afternoon duty, every day, for four years in a row, Mrs. McCarthy LOOKS FORWARD to her time on the crosswalk, as she understands the importance and impact that starting and ending your day at WSJ with a smile can have for many of our students. Similarly, parents waiting in what can feel like a never-ending car rider line look forward to seeing the Traffic Cone's Halloween costume or which crazy hat the traffic cone wears on Crazy Hat Day! Her positive attitude is contagious - students, parents and other staff members find themselves singing, dancing and smiling along with her as they come and go.

Not only is Mrs. McCarthy an icon in our community, her joy, creativity, positivity, and dedication to students are evident in the work that she does in our school building with our STRIVE students. Last year, I had the pleasure of Mrs. McCarthy working with a STRIVE student in my first-grade classroom for several subjects a day. The positive impact her presence had on my classroom community was profound. Not only was Mrs. McCarthy a positive, supportive and patient paraeducator for her STRIVE student, she easily developed meaningful relationships with ALL our students, modeling for them the importance of inclusivity, acceptance and empathy. Her example fostered a classroom community that accepted and celebrated this STRIVE student with open arms!

Our students, their families, WSJ teachers and staff – we are all immensely fortunate to be a part of a school community that includes an outstanding person like Mrs. Julie McCarthy."

Join us in congratulating Mrs. McCarthy for receiving this well-deserved honor!

We can't wait to see you in your tie-dye today, showing kindness!

Remember, tomorrow is World Kindness Day! Join us in showing how we are TIED together with Kindness. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🖤🤍

Last night, our very own Mrs. Haughton was recognized for the Harford County Education Foundation Everyday Hero Award. Join us in congratulating and celebrating her! 💛🐆

"Mrs. Haughton possesses a masterful ability to address the affective nature of every student with the same vigor applied to their academic abilities, doing so being free from bias. She welcomes all students, honing their skills to participate in the learning while developing their social and emotional skills. She establishes a rigorous learning environment with an empathetic approach. Her dedication to the growth of her students is unparalleled and her adaptability commendable. She brings these gifts not only to her students but to her colleagues as well. She teaches and learns with enthusiasm with students, colleagues and her community. Mrs. Haughton has an impressive commitment to parents and colleagues along with purposeful student-centered instruction."

As a reminder, this Friday is our first House Day!
