🌱 Something new for this winter.

We've been growing greens through the cold months for a few years now. Dylan and Justen over at Kelly Ridge Farms raise their hogs out on pasture. We got to talking this summer and figured we ought to just put the two together.

So here it is. The Winter Farm Box.

πŸ– Two pounds of their pork, sausage and ground πŸ₯¬ A head of our living butter lettuce 🌿 Three bags of winter greens πŸ“ A recipe card for whatever's in it that week

Twelve Saturdays, first and third of the month, October through March.

$35 a bag, or $390 for the whole season.

Twenty five spots. That's all we're doing the first year.

Last week to weigh in on the winter farm box.

We're closing the survey Sunday and sitting down with Dylan next week to decide.

Let's talk about the pork.

Kelly Ridge Farms LLC raises their hogs on pasture right here in our area. For the winter box, Dylan can do ground pork, sausage, and ham steaks. If you've had it, you know. If you haven't, that's reason enough to sign up.

Pork and greens is about as Appalachian as it gets. Collards with sausage, ham steaks with mustard greens, kale in a pot of soup. We're also working on getting recipes together so nobody's staring at a bag of greens wondering what to do with it.

Still gathering feedback. Two minutes:

We started seeding for winter this week.

A lot of folks don't know we grow straight through the cold months. Our greenhouses are heated, so while everything else around here is dormant, we're still cutting fresh greens in January and February. They taste better in winter too. Cold weather sweetens collards and kale in a way summer never does.

That's the whole idea behind the farm box we're working on with Kelly Ridge Farms. Local pork and fresh greens all winter, when nobody else has either one.

Survey's still open if you haven't filled it out yet:

Something new is coming this winter, and we need your input.

We've been talking with Dylan at Ridge Farms LLC about putting together a winter farm box. His pasture raised pork, our fresh greens, October through March. Pickup at the Abingdon Farmers Market.

Before we build it, we want to know what you'd actually want. Seven questions, about two minutes.

Tell us what you'd pay, how often you'd want a box, and which greens you'd really use. We'd rather hear it from you than guess.

This is exactly why we do what we do. 🌱

We're so proud to partner with Bristol schools to grow fresh, locally sourced butterleaf lettuce for their lunch program. Knowing our greenhouse helps put good, nutritious food on students' trays here in our own community means the world to our family.

Thank you to Bristol schools for caring this much about what your kids eat, and for letting us be a small part of it. Here's to a healthy year ahead. πŸ’š

Did you know . . . We have not served Iceberg lettuce in our school lunch program in over 3 years? We look forward to serving fresh, locally sourced, nutritious butterleaf lettuce again this year. Thank you to our partnership with Wyndale Gardens.
