I didn’t start setting boundaries until I was in my early 30s.

They were terrifying to me.

I was conditioned in a home where ‘putting others first’ was glorified.

It wasn’t until I became more aware that I saw underneath the self sacrifice + codependency was a lot of controlling behaviors.

Without clear boundaries, there is usually control + resentment.

There often demands.

Demands come from a wounded space. When our needs are unmet for years (or decades) we don’t know how to objectively state our limits.

We become demanding in an unconscious attempt to remain in control— to not get hurt.

Demands put another person on the defensive. They also active the nervous system, making another person feel unsafe.

When we feel unsafe we can’t authentically connect or communicate. This is why when people make demands on us we become so resistant. We can’t actually hear what the person is feeling or needing.

We just *feel* controlled.

Boundaries are for US.

They’re not attempts to control another persons behavior. That’s the tough part about boundaries— we have to take responsibility. If someone doesn’t honor our boundaries, we have to follow through on our limit.

Regardless of how uncomfortable this makes us feel.

When I first started placing boundaries with my family, there was push back. Tons of hurt feelings + misunderstandings. I couldn’t control the reactions.

All I could do was navigate how I responded to them + work to trust that setting boundaries would free me from so much of my resentment.

With practice, they did.

What’s your *biggest* struggle with boundaries? #selfhealers

This Holiday season, take time to assess how much time you and your children and family members are spending on screens. Do you or someone in your family show irritability, a difficult time focusing, back pain and trouble sleeping? It’s most likely due to phone, tablet and tv usage. Try some fun screen free activities together and share below how you’ve spent this Holiday season with less screens.
