Let's Celebrate Thomas Elementary TLC Teacher of the Year-Amy Kasberg!

Amy Kasberg is a 1st grade teacher at Thomas Elementary. Her positive leadership benefits the entire campus as well as her students and their families. Ms. Kasberg is currently a team leader and has been on the Lighthouse Team for several years. Her sense of compassion for students is evident daily in her first-grade classroom. Her conviction and commitment to helping her students in any way can be witnessed on a daily basis. Perhaps it is small groups, talking one-on-one to a student, or finding shoes for someone in need. Ms. Kasberg believes in using songs and humor in daily lessons that otherwise could easily get monotonous and boring. Her commitment to her students learning makes her an invaluable part of her school and our district. Congratulations Ms. Kasberg! #CelebrateAISD

Let's Celebrate Taylor Elementary TLC Teacher of the year-Brandon'a Garcia!

Brandon’a Garcia is an art teacher at Taylor Elementary, who truly loves what she does. She is a proud product of AISD, and loves teaching students how to use different mediums to create art, but and is driven to teach them how to become positive contributors to their school and community. She creates very interactive lessons, and sets high expectations in her room for students to work together, be productive, but also making sure to have some fun too. She encourages her students to always give their best, so they can be proud of what they have accomplished. She has served on the Textbook's Adoption Committee, Yearbook Club Sponsor, and as the Art Department Chair. We are proud to have you in AISD Ms. Garcia! #CelebrateAISD

It was so good to see Abilene High seniors receiving their yard signs last week. You all deserve to be celebrated! 🦅🎓

Let's Celebrate Reagan Elementary TLC Teacher of the Year-Lori Thompson!

Lori Thompson is a fourth-grade teacher at Reagan Elementary. She has served as a Grade Level Chair, is a member of the Guiding Coalition Committee as well as on the Campus Needs Committee. Ms. Thompson often works in her classroom early in the mornings and then again late in the afternoons. She also supports students by showing up at student games (they love seeing her in the bleachers). She gives students access to books they might not otherwise have the opportunity to read, and helps them discover new worlds through reading. She is passionate about inspiring students to love reading, but also because she believes as a teacher it is her duty to engage students in thinking about ethical questions often posed by stories found in children’s literature. We are proud of you Ms.Thompson! #CelebrateAISD

Let's Celebrate Ortiz Elementary TLC Teacher of the Year- Tara Nelson!

Tara Nelson is a 4th grade Math and Science teacher at Ortiz Elementary. She is an ESL Certified teacher, as well as being an Apple Certified and Google Level 1 Certified teacher. She stated one of the greatest lessons she learned early in her career and life that she shares with her students is, “One difficult situation does not have to define you. In fact, a shake-up can be just the catalyst for change you need. ” One of her students wrote, “You don’t mess around in Ms. Nelson’s room, she knows we are smart, and won’t let us get away with being lazy. She just tells us, “Nope, you know…you just don’t know it YET. Keep trying.” Ms. Nelson is also the Future Shapers of Abilene Winner for 2019-2020! #CelebrateAISD

Let's Celebrate Martinez Elementary TLC Teacher of the Year-Taylor Surles!

Taylor Surles is a fifth-grade Math teacher at Martinez Elementary. She has served as a student council coordinator and as an AVID counselor at her previous campus. Taylor says as a Math teacher she tends to see things very black-and-white. However, knowing her students learn best through engaging activities and applying lessons to real world situations, she has come to love project-based learning. With project-based learning students have more opportunity to explore the content with depth and complexity, and it allows for different interpretations of the concepts being taught. Ms. Surles philosophy on education is that all children deserve an education appropriate to their ability. Congratulations Ms. Surles! #CelebrateAISD

Let's Celebrate Lee Elementary TLC Teacher of the Year - Chelsea Rico!

Chelsea is a third-grade teacher at Lee Elementary where she has taught for six years. Her colleagues say “she is a dynamo, driven by a love for students, and a sincere passion to see them become all they can possibly be.” Chelsea is able to balance her class with stern structure, but with fun and personality at the same time. She continually reads, researches educational material, and attend workshops to try and learn new instructional strategies to support her students' academic growth. Ms. Rico writes, “I believe teaching students how to be kind and having empathy towards others is an invaluable lesson, which illustrates flawlessly through the theme and meaning behind this novel.” So glad to have you as part of AISD! #CelebrateAISD

Let's Celebrate Johnston TLC Teacher of the Year - Betty Poorman!

Betty Poorman is a second-grade teacher at Johnston Elementary with 20 years of teaching experience! She has served as a grade level chair, a mentor teacher to 1st year teachers, a CHAMP’s coach, and the PTA treasurer for five years at her former campus. Ms. Poorman’s dedication and service extends beyond the classroom to the rest of Johnston family. Ms. Poorman always strives to make her students become better versions of themselves and feels we all learn and grow every day. She never wants her students to think that their current life situation will ultimately define them. According to Ms. Poorman the most valued recognition comes when she hears 19 little voices saying, “Good morning, Ms. Poorman.” We are so proud of you! #CelebrateAISD

As part of the spirit squad, he taught students how to develop rhythms that they played on drums and trash can lids to accompany the chants. One of his student’s favorite units and a foundational cornerstone of his teaching style is his Diversity unit. He encourages his students to see other people's differences as positives rather than negatives. Mr Green says, “I'm for every student to hop in the front seat of their learning experience.” So proud of your Mr. Green, thank you for choosing to be a teacher! #CelebrateAISD
