Blue Ridge Elementary School USD 473

Blue Ridge Elementary School is one of four elementary schools in the Chapman USD 473 School District.

Blue Ridge 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders had the opportunity to learn about Native Bees last Friday. The students enjoyed these activities!

Middle School Orientation was held today for all incoming 6th graders. The students toured the school, and met with each core teacher to learn more about becoming a 6th grader. Our Blue Ridge students are looking forward to next year at Chapman Middle School.

Blue Ridge 4th graders had a blast yesterday at the Dickinson County Water Festival!

In honor of Earth Day, the 5th graders presented a program for grades K-4. The students encourage everyone to take care of our Earth by making everyday Earth Day.

Here is a sneak peek of the Spring Music Program! The program will be held on Thursday, April 25 at 7:00 p.m. in the Blue Ridge gym. Thank you for the preparation and dedication to our students, Mrs. Shehi! It will be a rockin' good time!

4th and 5th graders did a few PEEP-TASITC science experiments last week. They had a blast!!

Blue Ridge 2nd and 5th graders were honored to have Dr. Vicki Sherbert speak during our Poetry Pal meeting this week. Dr. Sherbert shared poems she has written, and her favorite books of poetry. In 1985, while teaching at Wakefield School she started, "Pages of Promise". A collection of poems written by students. Blue Ridge 2nd and 5th graders have brought "Pages of Promise" back to life. Thank you Dr. Sherbert for being an inspiration for students. May you always keep a poem in your pocket.

Congratulations to the 5th grade class. They received word this week that their published book, "Starbase” has been selected as a semi-finalist in the Studentreasures National Book Challenge. Becoming authors is such a magical experience!!

Kindergarten had fun on this nice day with bubbles!

4th grade has loved Mystery Science this year. They have been working on force and motion with their bumper coasters.

Today during Poetry Pals, we were able to FaceTime a Kansas Poet named Elizabeth VanHoutan, author of " Smothered In Ketchup " -- a collection of fun poems for kids to enjoy. April is National Poetry Month, so we enjoyed meeting a published poet and asking her questions.

A huge thank you to Mrs. A for organizing another fun Reading Reward Party! Another thank you to Blue Ridge PTO for funding our reading program. Students enjoyed the afternoon bowling! Strike!

4th and 5th grade students got to enjoy the Salina Symphony on Friday. This was a great experience!!

Come bid on these AMAZING silent auction baskets at the Blue Ridge annual carnival. There will also be raffle drawings, games, and food! Doors open at 5:30! Games start at 6:00! See you tomorrow!!

Mrs. Lexow‘s third-grade class enjoyed a presentation about the culture of Senegal by Kylie Hicken.

The 5th graders recently experienced the life of the British colonists during the American Revolution. The students reenacted a taxation simulation. Kaden served as King George III. Kaylee and Meredith were the tax collectors. They collected the taxes from the colonists. Ten different taxes were collected throughout the day. One tax that was enforced was the Stamp Act Tax. Students were taxed for the papers they needed throughout the day. At the end of the day the amount of gold coins the colonists (students) had left were traded in for M&M's.

5th Grade and 2nd Grade Poetry Pals met to exchange Valentine Poetry. Mrs. Seirer shared a book of poems titled, "Smothered in Ketchup" written by an elementary teacher and illustrated by her brother.

The Blue Ridge 3rd graders celebrated Kansas Day by making bread in a bag with the DK County Extension office and then making homemade butter to enjoy on it. We also got to attend a field trip to the Smoky Hill Museum in Salina where we learned about making butter, learning about making choices of what pioneers would have had to pack to travel to Kansas in the pioneer days, shucking and grinding corn, and playing pioneer games. We learned a lot and had fun celebrating our state’s birthday!

Saint Francis will be holding an educational night for prospective foster parents at Chapman Elementary School on Thursday, April 4th, 2019. The event will be from 6:00-7:00 p.m.

Blue Ridge 5th graders wrapped up Starbase STEM lessons in Salina this past week. The students were engaged in programming robots and using wind energy to experiment with a variety of wind turbines. A highlight of the final day was shooting off the rockets they designed.

Blue Ridge 4th Graders had their Famous Kansan Wax Museum today. The 4th graders researched a famous Kansan, memorized their lines, and presented to parents, school board members, and Blue Ridge Students. Great job 4th grade!!

In honor of Kansas Day, the 5th graders decorated sunflower cookies. Happy 158 years, Kansas!

Blue Ridge celebrated Kansas Day today. 158 years of statehood for this great state!

Blue Ridge and Enterprise 5th graders are starting something new. We are using Skype to connect once a week. The students are having Book Talks about books they are reading. Our first Book Talk was a success.
