An innovative, child-led, nature-based play experience designed to foster creativity & independence!

✨Day One of Village Folk Camp was filled with imagination, creativity, and teamwork as our students transformed the woods into their very own village✨

Armed with an abundance of loose parts and natural materials, the children designed and built forts of all shapes and sizes—creating spaces for gathering, storytelling, problem-solving, and play.

Fort building is so much more than play. As children plan, carry materials, negotiate ideas, and adapt their structures, they are strengthening critical thinking skills, cooperation, communication, and perseverance.

The uneven terrain, heavy branches, and open-ended materials also support gross motor development, balance, coordination, and spatial awareness.

✨This is the magic of TimberNook: giving children the time, space, and freedom to create their own worlds in nature.✨

Happy Memorial Day

This Memorial Day, we remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom!

✨Movement doesn’t have to be complicated—it can be woven into the rhythm of everyday life ✨

A daily walk on a local trail, time at the park, dancing in the kitchen, building an indoor obstacle course, or simply stepping outside barefoot to explore all give children what they need most: time and space to move.

These simple moments strengthen balance, coordination, confidence, sensory regulation, focus, and connection while supporting healthy development in every area.

✨Sometimes the best gift we can give our children isn’t more structure, but opportunities to move, explore, and connect with the world around them✨

✨💚 This year was filled with muddy boots, tiny hands exploring, curious minds discovering, and meaningful moments of connection. ✨💚

Week after week, these little ones showed us that growth happens best through play—through wonder, movement, exploration, and the simple joy of being fully present in nature.

We are so thankful for each family who chose to spend their mornings with us, slowing down and embracing the beauty of childhood alongside us. Watching these tiny learners grow in confidence, curiosity, and independence has been such a gift.

At TimberNook, these early years are about so much more than play. They are about building connection, fostering resilience, encouraging creativity, and allowing children the space to develop exactly as they were meant to—through hands-on experiences in the natural world.

Thank you for being part of this Tiny Ones season and for trusting us with these precious moments. We are so grateful for the memories made together and cannot wait to see where their adventures lead next.

✨💚 Be sure to follow along on our page, TimberNook of the Sandhills, for updates and more moments of childhood magic✨💚

✨ Risky Play: How to Do it Safely & Why It's Important ✨

Risky play is any age-appropriate behavior that includes elements of thrill, uncertainty, and challenge. It gives children opportunities to test limits, assess risk, solve problems, and build confidence through real experiences that support healthy physical, emotional, and cognitive development.

CATEGORIES OF RISKY PLAY

1. Play with heights
• Climbing jumping, hanging balancing
2. Play with high speed
•sledding running sliding bicycling
3. Play with dangerous tools
• saw, hammer and nails, knives, rope
4. Rough and tumble play
• Wrestling play-fighting sword-fighting
5. Play near dangerous elements
• near a creek, lake, or fire pit
6. Exploratory play alone
•bicycling around neighborhood playing in woods
7. Play with impact
crashing into something for fun
8. Vicarious play
• younger children watching older children

GUIDELINES FOR ENSURING SAFETY & ENJOYMENT IN RISKY PLAY

Establish ground rules:
I. Words like "no" or "stop" means to stop immediately!
2. Always have a plan to climb down if you climb up
3. Ensure proper safety gear (helmet, pads, bright clothing)
4. When an adult says it's not safe that means it's a "not right now", but one day you might be able to!
5. Make sure everyone agrees on the game and rules

Ask Questions like
• "Is everyone having fun?"
• "What are your rules for this game?"
• "What is your plan to get down?"

Avoid saying:
• "Be careful!"
• "Never"
• "Let me"
• "You're too." (little, young)

✨This is what Wild Ones is all about✨

A year of muddy hands and curious minds. A year of climbing higher, imagining bigger, exploring deeper, and growing in ways that can’t always be measured on paper.

At Wild Ones, childhood is honored the way it was meant to be—through unhurried play, meaningful risk-taking, problem-solving, creativity, connection, and wonder found in the natural world. Here, sticks become tools, mud becomes masterpieces, and every challenge becomes an opportunity to build confidence, resilience, and independence.

The learning that happens here often looks simple from the outside: building forts, balancing on logs, digging in the dirt, working together to solve problems, and creating stories only children could imagine. But underneath those moments, something extraordinary is happening. Neural pathways are strengthening. Social-emotional skills are deepening. Confidence is taking root.

To our Wild Ones families: thank you.

Thank you for trusting the process. Thank you for saying yes to muddy clothes, scraped knees, messy boots, and the kind of childhood that fosters courage, capability, and joy. Thank you for believing that real growth happens when children are given the time and space to play freely, explore fully, and become exactly who they are meant to be.

To our Wild Ones: thank you for your laughter, your wonder, your bravery, and your endless curiosity. You reminded us every single day what childhood is meant to look like.
