Well-deserved recognition for Officer Jason! We are so thankful for all you have done and continue to do for our Aberdeen Middle School community! 💙💛💙💛
NASRO would like to recognize Officer Jason Neidig of the Aberdeen Police Department in Maryland as January 2022's SRO of the Month. Officer Neidig met a special student during his time as the Aberdeen Middle School SRO.
"During my time as the middle school SRO, Messiah and I had an OK relationship, nothing ever hostile," Officer Neidig said. "I could tell he was reserved and didn't care for law enforcement. I never asked him, this is just a hunch I had."
When Neidig started investigating a school shooting threat in May 2021, he was shocked to discover Messiah was the prime suspect. He assisted his department with executing a search warrant of Messiah's home, where he had the opportunity to speak with Messiah's mother and stepfather and find out more about the child's home life, including struggles with suicidal ideations and a somewhat troubled relationship with his stepfather.
Officer Neidig immediately began working with Messiah one on one through face-to-face conversations, texts, and phone calls. He even invited Messiah to attend church with him and his family, where Messiah got involved with the Wednesday night youth group. As their relationship blossomed, Messiah even attended a demolition derby with Officer Neidig and his family over the summer.
The case against Messiah was eventually dropped, but one of the conditions Messiah's mother set forth was the he continue to work closely with Officer Neidig.
In the fall, Messiah's stepfather received a terminal cancer diagnosis. When Messiah's stepfather passed away two weeks before Christmas, Officer Neidig stepped in and helped provide gifts for Messiah and his younger sister on Christmas Day.
Since the death of his stepfather, Messiah is worried for his family, how they will survive and make it," Officer Neidig said. "Mom told me he is at a really bad spot in his life. I continue to stay in contact weekly if not more."
We are all rooting for Officer Neidig and Messiah. This story is a great example of an officer bridging the gap between youth and law enforcement and leaning into the TRIAD concept -- serving as not only a law enforcer, but as a teacher and an informal counselor.
A reminder AMS, tomorrow, Friday January 14, is a 3 hour early dismissal day. See attached scheule.
