Melissa Chapman Skinner recently attended the 22nd session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues that met April 17-28 in New York, NY. A delegate of the Presiding Bishop, Michael Bruce Curry of the Domestic & Foreign Missionary Society of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States, an ECOSOC accredited NGO and member province of the worldwide Anglican Communion.
This forum serves as an opportunity for Indigenous peoples to provide expert advice to global leaders through the U.N.’s Economic and Social Council, as well as other U.N. agencies working around the globe. This is Chapman Skinner’s fifth year representing the group, but this year was special, as she had the opportunity to share an intervention to the UN Forum, which commended the Catholic church’s recent repudiation of the Document of Discovery, a 15th century document that is often used as justification for the subjugation or enslavement of Indigenous peoples. The delegation also hosted a multi-faith worship service at the Chapel of Christ the Lord at the Episcopal Church Center, followed by lunch and a panel discussion, entitled “The Church and Indigenous Boarding Schools: A Time of Reckoning and Looking to the Future.”
Congratulations to the Presentation College class of 2023!
