Happy holidays from NSU! 🎄

Each year the President’s office asks an NSU student, faculty, or alumni to design the annual holiday card. This year it was created by junior Alyson Lang, a Digital Media major. Thank you to + President Schnoor for supporting our students!
This fall, the advanced graphic design students worked with the Aberdeen Homeless Coalition to create their visual brand identity. The AHC is a local organization who provides resources to the regional houseless population. Finding inspiration in the state’s natural landscape and heritage, Senior Jake Steinbring and Junior Aly Lang presented the visual identity to the organization. Big thank you to the AHC Board and Anna Moser + Kathy Zerr! Great work Jake + Aly! 🌺

Cat’s Cradle
A game where one loops strings between their fingers to create a pattern. In play, the string is passed between different people, changing the pattern in each pass.
In Ancient Greece, it was believed that the lives of men and gods were woven by three sister goddesses called the Moirai. The stories that they wove were binding – even the gods could not change their fates. For thousands of years, we have retold these unchanging stories. But what if this could change?
My work explores popular myths from the perspective of a secondary character, detailing the life and choices of both hero and monster. However, my stories are unfinished.
The poets of Ancient Greece called upon the Muses to help write their stories. But I call upon no divinity for my stories, I call upon you.
So tell me “muse,” how do these stories end?

ARTIST STATEMENT
Creatures like cicadas are what draw my attention as an artist. They are little ‘nuisances’ that shake up the monotonous human life. The love, curiosity, and fascination of the creatures that live on this earth with us. So often do people forget we share this earth with the most fascinating things. People get so caught up with how others are living their life they forget the life we are surrounded with and take for granted.
BIO
I attend Northern State University pursuing a BSED in Art Education degree. Before Northern I was a self taught artist. Using YouTube to teach myself how to draw. That is where I developed my love for digital media. When I was young I wanted to pursue a career in Online content creation through YouTube or Twitch. I found a love for bugs, strange creatures, animals, and folklore of the world. This influenced my artwork and love for character design illustration. I love immersing myself in the strangeness of our world and finding new creatures to draw everyday.
——-
I love alternative fashion and dressing up in fun weird outfits. I love watching anime and learning about foreign cultures. I grew up in Orient, SD, a small town with barely a population of fifty people. My close family alone makes up twelve percent of that population. I live and work on my family’s farm. I may be Midwest but my personality is far from what is ’normal’ here.
