Congratulations to NSU alum, Nate Franzén, on being named the 2026 Bruning Award recipient by the American Bankers Association!

The Bruning Award is one of the banking industry’s highest honors, recognizing agricultural bankers for exceptional leadership and a commitment to providing credit and financial guidance to America’s farmers and ranchers.

With more than 32 years in agricultural banking, Nate has been an advocate for agriculture, rural communities and the future of banking. It's official! Our first Campfire Sessions artist is Darryl Tonemah!

Tonemah is a singer-songwriter whose music blends folk, rock, and Native storytelling into a sound that is both deeply personal and universally relatable. With a voice that carries honesty and grit, his songs explore themes of love, loss, resilience, and identity, often weaving in the experiences of Native life and the human spirit’s ability to rise.

We hope to see you next Friday, September 18th at 6:30pm on Malchow Plaza for the first of two campfire sessions.

Northern State University welcomed 𝟑,𝟖𝟗𝟎 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐥 — 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐞𝐧𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲!

This year’s growth includes 470 new undergraduate degree-seeking students, including 370 freshmen, a 28% increase over fall 2025 and the largest freshman class since 2013. Northern also welcomed 100 new transfer students.

The momentum is being felt across campus, with on-campus housing growing 12.3% and an 83% retention rate marking the university’s highest since 2007.

This growth reflects the strength of the Northern experience and the faculty, staff, alumni, community partners, donors and supporters who invest in our students and our university.
